I just had a whack of Space Base games start from a tournament that I didn't sign up for. I haven't played tournaments in 6+ months, so not sure how this could have happened. And now I can't quit it without losing reputation.
Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
According to your profile, you signed up for the tournament 7 months ago ("grinspy registers for a tournament: Space Base The Round • Space Base month - 7 months ago "). Is it possible you forgot you signed up? I probably wouldn't remember signing up 7 months ago.
I'm also not sure as I've not done it, but doesn't withdrawing from a tournament only give you a 4 point karma penalty? That's negligible - it won't prevent you from accessing anything on BGA, and will be easily regained by finishing just 4 games. So if you really want to do that, I'd probably just take the hit.

When I saw this I knew who was running the tournament before I even looked it up. There is someone who for some reason thinks organizing tournaments with registration open for over a year is reasonable.nik592 wrote: ↑09 February 2025, 22:50 According to your profile, you signed up for the tournament 7 months ago ("grinspy registers for a tournament: Space Base The Round • Space Base month - 7 months ago "). Assuming that's a dig at me - I'm happy to delete all the hundreds I've made if you are promising to set up each one for the next 2 years, closer to the start time, with the same settings, as you are also a premium member with tournament-setting-up powers? Do confirm, and I'll handover the full list - you'll need to then plan your time and timings - I look forward to your confirmation as I'm sure you're not the type of person to just criticise without being proactive about putting in the time and effort yourselfMeeplelowda wrote: ↑10 February 2025, 05:10When I saw this I knew who was running the tournament before I even looked it up. Most people only sign up to tournaments 6 weeks or so before they start. Only a small % of users sign up very far in advance, and only a small % of that small % have stopped using the site by the time the tournament begins [example: if 100 people sign-up, then around 5-15 will do so more than 6 weeks before the start date, and 1 of those may have stopped using BGA regularly by the time it starts and need to withdraw next time they log-in]. The start date and the tournament settings are listed on each tournament page - no-one is being tricked into signing up to a tournament too early if they read the page for 3 seconds. I've balanced providing the site with lots of tournaments for different games and different formats, with it not taking up all my time to manage - I created lots of tournaments all in one go for lots of games. The alternative is that I'd just simply not set up any tournaments whatsoever, and most games would have no or few tournaments

Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
Then make the tournaments closer to the start date, within 6-8 weeks. It's not your fault that people forget about tournaments, but you understand how tournaments work better than most people on this site. BGA has a poor tournament notice layout that makes upcoming tournaments hard to see without looking for it. With that in mind, why not make the tournaments closer to the start date or even easier, restrict registration to 60 days prior to tournament start? Longer registration time can only make tournament quality worse, not better.
To readers, BGA needs more people to pick up the tournament slack for their favorite games. I have taken the initiative to organize 3-4 tournaments per month for one game, The Vale of Eternity and it's been going great so far with positive feedback from many players. I would be willing to setup tournaments for 1-2 other games at most if I start playing other games here, but that's it. We need more players to start making more frequent tournaments and shorter tournaments for their favorite games.
Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
If you read my full post, then I explain that that would take magnitudes more time and organisation, and it's either I make them far in advance in one-go, or not at all - and dozens of games would have barely any or zero tournaments. As I said to the other person, I'm happy to delete all the (hundreds?) of tournaments I've made if you promise to re-make them 6-8 weeks before the start-date is due? It sounds like my efforts are totally unappreciated, so I'll happily make no more tournaments beyond those that I definitely wish to partake in myself - I can let anyone who asks know that BananaHarambe and Meeplelowda will be hosting more tournaments and direct them to you if they want them setting up?BananaHarambe wrote: ↑11 February 2025, 01:59Then make the tournaments closer to the start date, within 6-8 weeks.
It really shouldn't be that hard for people to see the start-date on a page before clicking 'register' which is just near where the date is listed. The amount of players that sign-up to a tournament far in advance and then stop using the site by the time it starts is, like, 1-3 per tournament at most (and generally similar sort of levels to tournaments with shorter sign-up periods, as the sort of players signing up to tournaments are those that have used the site for a while and will keep using it for a while) - and it takes 5 seconds to click 'withdraw' when they next log-in if they no longer wish to partake.

Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
Please do.
No, I am not and will not.
It's odd to assume that the only response to your directive is capitulation. There is no reason a tournament with bad settings needs to exist at all. So the attitude that "if you don't like it, then you should make one yourself with your own settings" is a non sequitur.
It is a bad policy to allow hundreds of tournaments at a time to be indiscriminately scheduled, and it likely wasn't even conceived of that someone would do it so they didn't think to put a limit on it. Just like they didn't think ahead of time to find a way to limit how many tournaments someone could enter with the intent not to play in them and ruin them for the other participants, until someone did this regularly and it had to be dealt with in a reactive fashion. But they allow it, so you are violating no site rule with your behavior.

Mr Doctor,
At one hand great that someone makes tournaments, but it should be tournaments with normal settings, normal thinking times etc. As a lot of tournaments has weird setups. So yes, those may be deleted.
Your comments mostly are to other people:
If you don't like the settings, then don't join or then you should have more carefully read the setup etc. You still don't think that most (not all, but most) tournaments have weird setups for playing or way upfront registrations of 1-2 years (what in my opinion should have been a no go from the site).
As you see, there are people who even forget that they have registered, yes also their fault, but that would happen less with normal time frame registrations.
And you also make all kinds of setups which makes no sense at all for a game.
I play Heat a lot, but I have seen tournaments with just 1 day playing time, turn based. Even the drafting of cards already takes 2/3 days!!
The game has not even begun or is ended already by BGA!!
And i am only seeing a few games of tournaments, because i don't play a great variety of games on BGA, but with those kinds of setting, if people join without knowing all content of the tournament (bad reading or new players who don't understand settings yet, etc), then tournaments are getting a bad vibe and that is what most (again not all, but most) of your tournaments are giving people.
Not joiners in a elimination tournament, fine, they are eliminated 1 round later. But in a Swiss tournament with 20 games due to bad setup, you have them there for 20 games. And in some of your tournaments setup for games that is a time frame of 2-4 years.
So yes, great that someone is making tournaments, but if you are going to understand how to make normal setup tournaments for every game, then everyone will be more happy and you will see less kinds of these messages again, about people complaining about the tournaments.
Because what you must try to understand, most people are not complaining about someone making (a lot of) tournaments,
but complaining about the setup of all the tournaments being made, because again, most of the tournaments are getting a bad vibe.

Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
Any like that are literally called "one-day tournaments" - a series for people who like fast games - 100+ often sign up a week. 1 or so a week didn't read the settings properly before signing up. Most of players sign up knowing it's the format they want and are happy. Most tournaments I create (that aren't "super speed" or "one-day tournaments" ones) tend to be 15/30 day games. Across all tournaments, I probably receive about 1 message (directly or in the tournament chat/wall) per 500 sign-ups from someone who didn't read the listed settings properly before signing up - most people fully understand the speed, start-date, and number of games they're signing-up to as it's all written next to the 'register' button - and the overwhelming majority of people who sign up to a tournament that starts in 6+ months are still using the site by the time it starts and are capable of pressing the 'withdraw' button if they no longer wish to partake; the number of people who simply never log in again is probably about 0.5% and thus a comparable number to such people who sign-up to tournaments with shorter registration times
Anyway, this thread has taught me that I shouldn't make tournaments again. From now on I'll just set-up tournaments that I'm definitely partaking in myself, and not try and do something I thought was fun and helpful. Hope to see those complaining here (arrie1987, Meeplelowda, BananaHarambe) creating lots of tournaments for the high amount of games that get few tournaments ever created for them. Maybe I'll start deleting some of my 'bad' tournaments I've made. No need to reply here again, you've made your point in that you think I'm a horrid villain (despite BGA giving me a 2024 award shout-out for keeping tournaments alive). Thanks for publicly airing it on a forum and not ever talking to me about it directly before - totally (not) appreciated

Re: Being in tournaments that I didnt join?
You can have the name correct for a tournament, does not say it is a suitable setup for that game/tournament.
You probably forgetting the people who does not message and just don't play and spoil the fun for others. Even myself (5 years on BGA) did not knew in the beginning you can write messages on the forum/tournament wall. So yeah, people not playing in a 20 round swiss system for example is not fun.
Already doing that with others for games i know, and that i am playing, so i know the proper setups.
I did, but when i asked why do you make tournaments 2 year upfront, or make 2x20 rounds of swiss tournaments for Heat (Lasting 4 years of playing maybe) you answer was "Please don't message me with more such questions again".
