I despise when players use a strategy to kick another player at the end of game. It shouldn’t be allowed unless that player is at least 45 seconds past time. At the end of the game I had a lot of actions to do for my egg laying row and there was some lag. I knew I was winning and one of the losing players was very excited for a chance to kick me. I was 11 seconds past and they kicked me. It is so annoying to do and I worked hard building my strategy just to get a bitter player to kick me.

Re: Kicking someone who’s barely past their thinking time
Where did this number come from? If you accept the concept that it should be allowed at all, then a line has to be drawn somewhere. By what rationale is your number better than the current one? First you have to completely run out of time, and then someone has to trigger the expel process which has a 20-second waiting period (assuming no repeated undo that lessens it). So if you were 11 seconds over time when the process began, you weren't kicked until being at least 31 seconds over the limit.
I'll leave the usual response to this type of post to other people.

Expelling someone who's just 45 seconds over time is unsportsmanlike. Expelling should only be allowed after 45 seconds of being 45 seconds over time.

Yes, it is bad sportsmanship. Kicking a player who has abandoned the game is one thing. Kicking a player who has a convoluted series of actions in a single turn is a cheap way to get a win in a game that was not going to be a win. The opponent should have allowed you to finish your turn.
As for not allowing it to happen until X seconds past the timer reaching zero - as the others said, that's arbitrary, and could still result in the same thing happening.
I prefer not to join other people's created games so that I do not run into a timer setting I find inappropriately short. My main gripe is that some games never allow a player's turn timer to go any higher than 2:42, which is not enough time to reset the internet device after the service dropped, which I find far more frustrating than the situation described in this post.
I have had a player run out of time on two occasions (two different players in two different games). The first time I waited 15 minutes and found something else to do, checking occasionally to see if the player returned. The player did not return, so I neutralized the game. I didn't have much other choice, and the game was still early. The other time it happened, I waited, and the player returned within 4 minutes, and we finished the game.
The only time I would kick a player immediately is if that player had been rude in the chat, or had previously done it to me. (Which probably wouldn't happen, since I wouldn't be likely to play again with that player.)
But, not everyone cares about sportsmanship, unfortunately.
I saw something about Wingspan lagging in another thread. This is odd; I have not had any lag, but that definitely sounds frustrating if one is trying to activate a 5-bird habitat with brown powers in all 5 slots.

There is another choice. You can convert the game to turn-based, which you can do without their agreement if they are out of time. That's my preference for people who were playing who disappear but have decent karma.FrankJones wrote: ↑12 February 2025, 13:40 The first time I waited 15 minutes and found something else to do, checking occasionally to see if the player returned. Re: Kicking someone who’s barely past their thinking time
Could we please have these discussions in the main discussions forum rather than a game specific forum? This is not about Wingspan, it's about how BGA works for all real time games. Let's stick to just posts about Wingspan in the Wingspan forum please?
P.S. I don't even think it ever makes sense to play Wingspan in real time with strangers on BGA, because some moves take a lot of thought.

I'm not trying to convert a game of Terraforming Mars to turn-based when there are likely hundreds of actions remaining to be taken. I find turn-based play baffling. No appeal to me whatsoever. The game could take weeks, and then I might end up forfeiting if I find myself otherwise occupied for a few days.Meeplelowda wrote: ↑12 February 2025, 19:06There is another choice. There are different game speeds that players select. I choose fast play for a reason; if a player takes more than their allotted time, they could choose a slower speed. If there is a connection issue or other extenuating circumstance (and the player is communicating), we all get it. But I don't understand those players that voluntarily accept a fast-play game, then take more than their alotted time as "thinking time". It is rude to those of us that are anticipating a faster game.

So it's not for you. Maybe someone else reading this thread will find it useful and didn't know it was a possibility.FrankJones wrote: ↑13 February 2025, 01:14I'm not trying to convert a game of Terraforming Mars to turn-based when there are likely hundreds of actions remaining to be taken. Agreed. I have played 80 games (not counting solo games). I have run out of time maybe twice, and both times were internet failures by Verizon.FoCoCAM wrote: ↑13 February 2025, 01:31 There are different game speeds that players select. I select games with a turn timer appropriate for the game itself (some games rarely need more than 30 seconds for a turn) and for my playing style.
Some games though do not work well with a turn timer. Chess, for example. (I have no idea whether they have chess here).
