Double draw (4 player) so why not single draw option?

Post by Jonhinch »

I am sorry to push this point but I just started a new game as saw there was an option for double draw in the 4 player game. I assume that means you pick up 2 cards each go. Why has that option been allowed and not an option to have a single card draw on 2 or 3 player games? I can't see the coding being hard to do. I accept people have their own preferences like someone being surprised the deck was not always frozen. Having a double draw really slows the game down and makes it teadeous and just luck as to whether you can go out. I have never seen the deck run out so many times as I have in the games with double draw. In my view that really ruins the skill of canasta. I accept for someone that plays that way it is correct but if Canasta if deemed worthy of being on BGA why limit its appeal for those of us that prefer the skill of surprise goings out? Thanks

I don't agree the single draw rule in 2/3p enhances skill element and shortens the game, after some playtesting:
- Reduced hand size significantly delayed the game end
- The games turned out to be more dependent on discard pile and card draws, especially during late game (>3000 which requires 120+ initial meld)

Regardless, added the option. This option is automatically removed in 3-deck games and 10000-point games.
Also, from this point I'm not adding more variants, as too many variants actually hamper matchmaking.
