When I organize tournaments the hardest thing is figuring out time settings so that players can finish each round comfortably, but not have so much time that a player who drag things out to the maximum can bog the tournament down even though they could have played faster. Unfortunately, you have to learn what settings work "on the job" because there are no tools that provide an estimate for you. So far I've been lucky to avoid a disastrous tournament where many tables were reaching max time.

This person may have been new to organizing tournaments, or hadn't run one for this particular game. Maybe it's best to just set it to 30 days like Mathew5000 does, at least the first time you run a particular game.

The easiest thing to under estimate is just how much extra players add to a game, it's not linear of like each extra player adds x, it's exponential. If your game is 2 player at some point it's likely both players will be online at the same time and take several turns very quickly, the odds of this happening go down the more players you have, to the point at 5 player it will be pretty unlikely. You also have to factor in at that player count it's likely you will get players in very different time zones.

I would tend to agree if a tournament is 5 player I would always set the clock to 30 days, I'm sure there are games you can get away with less, but why risk it? It also contributes that the next option is 15 days which of course is significantly shorter, there's no in between option where 30 days might be too long, but 15 days is running things tight (which I suspect might be the case at a game like Wingspan), so you're better off siding on the side of caution as less can go wrong by making the clock too long vs too short.

That's definitely ambitious for Wingspan, unless all 5 players are in the same country/timezone, or it's intentionally meant to be very-very fast games. I'd expect a 5p Wingspan game to take about 20-30 days, generally. For Wingspan tournaments, I'd recommend 10 day minimum for 2p games; 15 day minimum for 3p games; and 30 days for 4/5p games.

Honestly, I want the opposite: automatically skip the first person who runs out of time, no letting people strategically decide whether to skip or not. One game's players deciding to be "nice" by letting people go way over time doesn't just affect those players but everyone else in the tournament, and I've played tournaments where literally every round had someone going over.

Yes, because time in tournaments is fixed, and largely depends on the timezone difference between you and the player before you. If they happen to play just after you go to sleep for a night, you lose about 8 hours off your clock each day. Even with the highest amount of time allocated to each player, you can easily run out of time before the end of the game, sooner if your time is less. I regularly run out of time in tournaments and almost never in normal games (I'm on here like 3-4 times per day, sometimes more, but that means very little if there's no turns for me to take in a tournament).

Unless you see tournaments as some kind of endurance contest, where a player should be getting up through their sleep time just in case moves have been made (and I have had people argue that at me before, though I personally don't agree with that idea).

What would be nice is variety of options for skip settings - auto-boot, no boot, unanimous boot (all players at the table with positive clocks must agree), or normal boot (current settings). Then people could make and join tournaments for a range of preferences and scenarios.
