Doubts about the Arena points rules explained in the FAQ

Post by Endar999 »

I have doubts about the points you earn in arena matches.
from the FAQ :
When you win a game in Arena mode, you gain Arena points. You gain 3 Arena points when beating an opponent from the same league, 2 points when beating an opponent from league N-1, 1 point for beating an opponent from league N-2, and so on (and the same for higher leagues).

When you lose a game, you lose Arena points. However, you cannot go below 0 points.
I honestly found this explanation a bit vague, and open to interpretation..
from what I understood this is the rule:
3 points + (Difference between my League with opponent league)

so if I have 5 leagues (Bronze,SIlver,Gold,Platinum,Elite), and simplifying to two players

points gained Winning :
7 points from league N+4
6 points from league N+3
5 points from league N+2
4 points from league N+1
3 points same league
2 points from league N-1
1 points from league N-2
0 (?) points from league N-3 (the FAQ say "and so on" exactly when a special case was coming..because winning 0 points is particular..)
0 (?) points from league N-4 (the math should say "-1", but I guess make no sense)

is correct?
and when i Lose is written i Lose Arena Points, but not written how many...I can guess the same logic:

So points lost losing:
7 points from league N-4
6 points from league N-3
5 points from league N-2
4 points from league N-1
3 points same league
2 points from league N+1
1 points from league N+2
0 points from league N+3
0 points from league N+4

is that correct?
so a Platinum against a Bronze can lose 6 points if lose, but if win will not gain anything (0 points)?

Is possible to modify the FAQ with a more clear text? or add a FAQ of the FAQ eh eh :)

This is correct. Keep in mind that not all games have an Arena with all of these levels. Some even go straight from bronze to elite, e.g., Twin Tin Bots.

You can filter your arena games so that you aren't matched with people far away in arena level, but this will slow down finding a match. Also, the filter works in both directions, so you can't just filter out people in lower arena levels (unless you've reached elite where there's nothing higher).

And once you reach elite, there's no sense in filtering (except if you want to block others from getting "extra" points when they beat you). In elite all that matters is the EAS, and players in any league can have EAS higher or lower than yours.

ok thank you
so considering that you can find strong player starting at bronze level, at platinum level make sense to make some filter to avoid bronze i Think.

You can't avoid bronze specifically, only stick to players close to your level, eg. +1/-1 (or even at your level). You also don't go below zero at the level you're currently at (once you reach a level you stay on it), so you probably aren't going to be taking such big losses most of the time.

I've had it work the other way in my favor as well. Many beginner Bronze arena players at actually worst than their initial hidden AES of 1500 so by playing one of the weaker Bronze players when they just got started for the season you can actually farm more AES off them than if they had already played 10 games and lost <100 AES already.

Anyone with a negative win rate in Arena will be overrated for their initial games. But yes, facing a hidden expert player and losing more points than expected can also hurt. It goes both ways so I think it's fair.
