Strange Elo, possible Bot ??

Post by utharlepreux »

Hi everyone
I feel confused about the Elo and sudden ranking score of a player
Is it possible to achieve 1st rank in arena and 556 Elo with 28 games and 26 victory only ?
game is Othello....

The person could have gotten really good at the game by playing outside of BGA, and just won most of their games since playing here.

I wouldn't assume its a bot because someone is good at something.

Generally, ELO is adjusted trice as fast for new players, and double as fast for newish players, in comparison to seasoned players.
Accordingly, for strong new players / accounts, its much easier to climb the ranks fast.

Furthermore, arena rank (where noone has a newb bonus) and ELO have no tight correlation. If you are the very first in a season to reach elite, you can be first in arena with 4 games I guess, no matter your skill or ELO

All this said, Othello/Reversi is a solved game, with tools easily available. As for any other solved abstract game here, it‘s very difficult to tell strong players from tool users. The „solution“ of BGA for most abstracts is to disable arena and rank achievements.

Even though it's on BGA, I wouldn't attempt to play a game that's been solved or has AI that can beat all humans, like Chess or Othello. Or you can play, but don't take your rating seriously.
