Why is boat mid a repeat FL?

Post by iLikeTrainz »

It is perhaps a small pet peeve of mine but I don’t understand why it is set up that boat mid repeats FL.

While I know there are occasional apps where this is a thing as well, the qualifier is imo to easy to get in progressive and is not that balanced.

I have never seen it be a repeat FL in any live OFC games I have played ever.

That is a major rules screw-up. Progressive (Which I assume means Pineapple; draw 3 play 2; with a standard fantasy-land hand being 14 cards) does not give a FL return for a middle boat.

That isn't even a return in regular Pineapple OFC.

If you have thought so, you should have reported it when you benefitted from that, with proper basis which supports the rule should be fixed:

This implementation was created in 2023, but for unknown reasons nobody has reported for 2 years and many sources I could find with ease actually reported middle hand is allowed to repeat Fantasyland. :/
For example: https://www.pokernews.com/poker-rules/p ... -poker.htm

This time I double-checked the rule sources to be sure, and the source closest to 'the official rules' indeed removes middle hand repeat condition:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160806165 ... antasyland
This site was defunct for years already, so I couldn't locate this while developing the game.
I spent an hour to just find this document (facepalm). Now fixed.

Thanks for sorting this out! And my apologies if I have not reported this in the proper way!

Truth is also that in live poker not a lot of OFC events are still going on.

I play all the OFC and OFC Highroller events in a nice mixed poker festival series called The Festival in Europe where Fantasy Land rules are tweaked a bit more, to balance the game a bit more.

In those events FL consists of 13-14-15-16 cards as compared to the normal 14 to 17, and FL repeats are not a thing.

I believe it is a great rule change, but not expecting that to be imported into BGA, just wondering what others think about it :D

it sounds fair. on one hand i enjoy my Fantasyland combos, it is like playing a slot machine. on the other hand, it requires little skill compared to the regular mode, so it is reasonable to limit it.

too bad i came 10 years late (2025) and the game has pretty much died out before i started

The reason Fantasy land was made oo be a 14-card hand was this:
In original OFCP, before pineapple, non-FL hands were pathetically weak. Fouls to FL ratios were 5 to 1. When Pineapple was introduced, non-FL hands became much stronger. And so, a FL hand with only 13 cards was barely at an advantage over non-FL hands that see 17 cards.

Has the game died out? I believe there is still a significant skill differential between top players and non-top players.

Fantasy Land is supposed to be a high-value result, given the high foul risk involved.

I'm confident I'll beat anyone here in Pineapple OFC if anyone wants to play. The few times I started a game, no one joined.

Problem why it ‘died out’ is actually pretty simple and the exact same thing happened with HU ‘regular’ poker games: there is a lot of bum hunting going on. Regular players fully exploiting recreational players and completely refusing to play with other regulars. From a professional point of view it makes sense, however it also kills a lot or action and genuine regular players can feel duped as they want to play everyone and know they will win in the long run. I have a track record to be arrogant enough to put me in the latter category.

Sometimes there might be a lot of value playing on these poker apps that also offer OFC initially, but it can dry up, because of bumhunters.

I made as a regular about 20k on one of those apps during covid in the first year, just playing anything from 0.25 up to 2.5euro per point, but random belarusian bumhunters dried out the whole pool and action stopped pretty soon after.

You don't think it had more to do with the exorbitant "fee" that was taken? It was typically 1 point per hand, which, at 20x, meant 20 "fee" per hand. And it was not capped at 4 or 5 per hand the way higher stakes poker games were no Full Tilt and Poker stars, etc. That's brutal, and made it unsustainable. At higher stakes, the fee or rake should be negligible to the players and yet still hitting whatever max cap there is that still provides the people running things adequate funds.

While rake can be incredibly high on some apps (also depends on club/circle) I personally have seen more issues with bum hunters.

On Pokio, the now closed app I used to play, that was the case at least. I only play OFC live now during poker festivals so im not sure what the situation is now online, but I imagine it has not changed much

Both issues were factors.

Bum-hunting is a direct result of the absurd rake.

I played extensively on the apps, crushing the small stakes games. Once I moved up to the higher stakes games (10x and 20x), the rake was horrendous, and the edges were so narrow, basically nobody won. Grinding out the tiniest of margins at extremely stressful stakes where you can lose 1000 units a hand was brutal. 15,000 units on a bad day. While paying absurd amount of rake. So, players would drop down in stakes and play 5x, "bum-hunting", so to speak, and that wasn't long-term viable either. Because then the weaker players stopped playing the lower stakes. In a game like Texas Hold'em, people always think they can and should be winning and are just getting lucky. In OFCP, it doesn't take long for the modestly intelligent to figure out they are just not winning players.

Also, the game was basically a game of open information. The losing players either:
1) reviewed hands to see what the winners were doing, and got better, or
2) got bored and gave up, or
3) went broke.

If the game existed on a major platform where 100,000 players are active at peak hours (such as Full tilt or poker stars before the horrific decision by the U.S. to ban online poker in 2010), with a capped rake of 4 units per hand regardless of stakes, the game would be alive and thriving. Maybe it still is in other countries where it is not relegated to shady underground "play-money" apps.
