How to see ELO of prospective opponent

So I get a game invite and i don't enjoy being completely crushed. How can I see the ELO for this person?

Kind of tough. Elo is at best a very rough guide. What you can do is limit the Elo of players joining the table in the setup of the table when you create it (either excluding very high or very low Elo values).

It wouldn't be that tough for the site to show it. Anyway I know about the limitations on matching and I use them. But sometimes I get an invite, and I don't have enough information to know if I want to accept.

Why not show this information?

If you click on the player avatar you access his "home page". If you scroll down you will see all the different games he has played and his ELO.
Easier if you use the search in your browser inserting the name of the game of your interest.

If instead of directly clicking on the invite, you go to "play now" you can see the table you have been invited for (you might have to click on the game first to see all available tables) and check out your opponent, before joining the table.

"Play now" fortunately still brings us to the "old" table creation UI, where you can see most of the information you'd want to see pretty clearly. Unfortunately the new UI is horrendously awful, and it sounded like they intended to eventually replace the old versions of these pages (the ones you get to from "Play now") with the new versions. I really hope they rethink that, scrap the new pages entirely, and try again from scratch, this time inviting a lot of feedback from people who use BGA. But beware, at some point the table creation screens we see from that link may go away.
