Group stage 1 that have Swiss- how many games ?

Post by yodamus »

In group stage 1 of tourneys that do a Swiss system. Is there a way to know how many games this will involve before I join ? Recently joined 2 with 20 matches. I of course will play them all out but would like to avoid that in the future. Thanks for help.

Yes.
You have to go to the bottom of the tournament's page, and here you'll have all info concerning each stage.

For instance, here is a tournament with Swiss System in stage 1 : https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=358490

When you scroll to the end of the tournament's page, you'll find this :

6 games for the swiss system.

Hey, don’t erase, it’s all good.

RE: Swiss number of rounds, I think less creators should be making 20 match tournaments, that’s just too long for most players and less popular than moderate length tournaments. Many players sign up for them by accident based on my discussions. To players that don’t read the settings it might feel like a hostage situation.

Some BGA players treat tournaments like they are these locked into the games and that there will be a huge social penalty and reputation loss for leaving. Withdrawing from a long tournament is not a big deal. You get a -4 reputation that disappears after 4 games and there is no record of it on your profile under penalties, unlike timeouts or skips.

I would recommend playing as long as you want to and then drop out. Don’t feel like you need to complete all the games if you don’t want to.

For a Swiss tournament I would always stay for the “sorting” portion of the tournament (128 players 2P has 7 rounds of sorting to make a 7-0 winner and diamond distribution of scores) and then decide from there based on my standing and enjoyment of the game and settings. Dropping out of a Swiss tournament if you in the bottom of the standings is highly recommended if they are a bunch of inactive, timeout players at the bottom and you’ll be unable to get a good game. If you are unable to get a good game, just drop out.

Unfortunately, this tournament forum functions as the FAQ and customer support, so we actually need threads like these to stay up for people to find in the future (those who attempt to look before posting, anyway).
