Turn based not very fun and what could improve it

Post by Phoxtrot »

In my opinion, this game has one design flaw : turns are too small, you don't feel like you are accomplishing something in most turns.

This is slightly annoying but acceptable when playing live.
It is much more problematic (for me) when playing online turn-based.

If you look at Terraforming Mars, the design there essentially avoided the problem by allowing people to take 2 actions per turn.

Now, if you want to give 2 actions per turn in 51st state without changing too much the tactics, you would have to do the following:
- *Attacks* can only be done as the 1st action of a turn
- Passing for the round can also be done only as the 1st action of a turn
- An *attack* is the razzia of an opponent's card or any action that forces another player to lose or transform a card or resource.
This way, you cannot do surprise attacks (by gaining guns in the first action and then a razzia) nor chicken away (play a card or do an attack and immediately afterward get out of the round). But you still get to play 2 actions per turn for most turns if you want.

Obviously, such a variant would require approval from the published/author of the game.

Let's see how the game performs on BGA as is. And then, if BGA and the publisher would be happy with this, we can probably get the budget for both New Era and Winter. And then, if everybody is happy, we can enhance the game by implementing 2 actions.
Terraforming Mars is a huge project with a big budget, they could allow different UI/UX decisions but 51st State is not that popular unfortunately. Hope we can do everything but no promises made.
Also, forum is not the best place for suggestions, please use https://boardgamearena.com/bugs?game=2170

Oh, I mentioned Terraforming Mars like I could have mentioned Thurn and Taxis and others but they all have 2 actions per turn as per the official rules. I was more talking about game design than how BGA can sometimes implement variants.

Most of the time, any BGA variant is just about making public some information normally secret which makes 100% sense as you can't expect players to remember things in games that may last weeks... And what's the point anyway if people can keep notes... BGA only variants rarely go beyond much beyond that.

I do often make suggestions in the bugs system but very few people read there and you cannot edit and it's not really a place to discuss ideas.

inherently those are different games and 1 action lets you counter the other ones action by destroying a crucial piece etc. which is needed and a huge benefit in the game. TM is totally different in this regard in my pov. just different games.

totally opposed to that change.

I have a different idea that would not change the game rules: allow players to plan their actions in advance, and the game executes those actions when it's the player's turn.
Planned actions could be interrupted when there is some kind of interaction between players, like a razzia.
