Remove rating systems, stick to facts

Post by BoardGaymesJames »

These system may have been a good idea at the start but are simply a inderance, alienating, and causing griefing and gaming of the systems. Stick to facts instead, show number of incomplete games, number of times over time, and let others make up the choice to play.

I was kicked 3 games today because of the server outage, you say you're going to wipe them, great, but it made me look closer at the systems and other suggestions. -10 , -20 sounds fine in practice but you only get +1 for completing a game without a time limit penalty, this is harsh!

Furthermore, time limits are very unfriendly to the disabled, and are very poorly calculated for literally every game I have been in trying to calculate my turn. This isn't chess, these are suppose to be fun, and these timers are not.

ELO makes no sense and we've heard of people having multiple accounts, playing with each other to boost ELO to get into tournaments. None of this makes any sense for why it even exists, we do not need to gamify gaming. Tournaments should once again be up to the person setting them up % of wins, % of games abandoned etc.

The 50% rating I have today greatly depremenaded my ability to play and it wasn't even my fault. These systems are simply alienating, especially for those with cognitive disabilities.

Some of these are valid points, but regarding ELO there are too many egos wrapped up in those numbers and they will never stand for having them done away with. One change that affected ELO nearly a year and three months ago created a backlash in the form of a thread with 993 replies and 2,582,556 (that's not a typo) views as of today. Those players would tell you to just ignore ratings or play in friendly mode if you don't like them. I don't share their fanaticism about that metric, but I do agree that caring or not caring about ELO is a personal choice, and it shouldn't be removed just because you (or I for that matter) don't care about it.

Similarly with time limits, you don't *have* to play with time limits. You have the option to play without them in various ways. So currently users can play with them or without them based on their own preferences. Taking away time limits would means no one has the option to play with them even if they want to. I am not in favor of creating fewer time options for players.

As for karma penalties, you say "you only get +1 for completing a game." That's true. But there are many fast games on here--some of which finish in around 5 minutes--that you can use to "farm" karma quickly. "But I don't like playing [fill in the blank]," you might say. Once again, choosing to play longer games in lieu of faster karma recovery is a personal choice. Several people have suggested the karma penalty is too easy to erase and thus repeat offenders can easily hide, and want even harsher penalties. I don't share that view, but I'm making you aware that there are other perspectives out there.

Yeah I understand and agree with you. Which is why I think the best way forward is uses the raw data. I had a thought that it would also be good to separate plays based on average game lengths, so you could very well see this person abandons long games more than short games.

True on ELO it doesn't mean anything, but would be nice if you never lost it since it's not worth anything.

This ... I've been an active member for roughly 3 days now, but I've already played over 100 games.

I was bad once and rage quit a game of 7 Wonders that just went horribly wrong from the getgo thinking doing it once wouldn't be too bad for my Karma. That was my bad, I was a poor sport, and I shouldn't have done that.

Then I had my timer run out on a long game of Wingspan when we were at 98%, and someone kicked me for it, and now my Karma is in the toilet. (Ironically, the person who kicked me would've won so they * themselves, but whatever.)

Now I'm rated Very Bad, and I'm struggling with people refusing to play me. And it's only been two games out of over 100 that I had a problem. This was shortly after I went Premium, and I'm now regretting my choice to do so because of the severe Karma hit I took. I think showing the actual number of incomplete games, number of times over the time limit, etc. would be much better way instead of this arbitrary Karma system that doesn't show the actual facts behind those Karma numbers.

As a post note: I don't know how the Karma system works, but also since the Wingspan incident, I have gotten multiple "Ooops" notifications about both the 7 Wonders game and the Wingspan game. At least 5 or 6. Am I getting a Karma hit each time that notice pops up? Why am I getting those notices multiple times?

You can quickly rebuild your karma at the rate of +1 for each game you complete without going over time. You can do it pretty quickly if you play very short real-time games.

As for the "oops" notifications, those sometimes don't even appear until the next time you log in. You've only received two karma penalties:
Today, 7 Wonders #645509790
*Today, 7 Wonders #645509790 -20☯
*Today, Wingspan #645425532 -20☯
Today, Wingspan #645425532
* 3 days ago, 7 Wonders #644437719

The * is for games you were actually expelled from by another player. The other games you ran out of time in at least once, but weren't expelled. Notice that in the 7 Wonders game 3 days ago you were expelled, but didn't get a karma penalty because you were new and you get a break the first time it happens.

It looks like you are sitting in games with timers that are too fast for you. A first step would be to set filters so that you aren't matched with games with faster time settings.

Hmmm ... I don't remember that one three days ago. That was my first day. The recent 7 Wonders game was the one I rage quit on. Again, I shouldn't have done that. And as for the Wingspan game, it was a Fast game, and I realized I don't like those so decided to not do them anymore.

But thank you ... your explanation was extremely helpful.

OMG ... I'm so sorry. The word I used was not one that *I* consider a swear word, but I guess this forum does. I will refrain from using that word again in the future. My apologies.

BGA is a big platform with a diverse user base. If you don't like playing with rating, don't. If you don't like playing with timers, don't. That's no reason to delete them from the platform, but the options you're asking for exist and I'd recommend you start using them. A large percentage of users on BGA only play friendly games with no time limits. This option exists if you don't like ratings or timers.

"Quitting" (as opposed to conceding) can be done two ways. Either you specifically use the "abandon the game" feature, or you just leave the table by closing the browser table or something. Most people don't even know the "abandon" feature exists, so I figured you rage quit by simply closing the browser. Here's the log from that game:
Move 70 :12:35:05 PM
rolkabt has quit the game and is going to lose this game whatever happens.
Move 71 :12:35:10 PM
easygoer1989 quit the game after someone else quit the game (= no penalties).
Move 73 :12:35:24 PM
manalishi quit the game after someone else quit the game (= no penalties).
Move 74 :12:35:27 PM
Kethros quit the game after someone else quit the game (= no penalties).
Move 75 :12:36:15 PM
karoll908 is out of time, so TheWob skips his/her turn
Move 76 :12:37:49 PM
All players (with a positive clock) chose to abandon this game.

karoll908 simply left the table without clicking the quit button, but it didn't matter because once you were gone karoll908 was going to be tied for 1st with everyone else no matter what. TheWob apparently didn't get the memo and "expelled" karoll908 after their time ran out, but of course karoll908 didn't receive a penalty either.

You're a bit split on your topic of this post, not a big deal. You seem to play quite casually on BGA, trying a variety of games and not focusing on specific games and playing over and over/ This is totally respectable and in line with the idea behind BGA to try different games online to promote them.

Regarding Elo, the competitive arena and tournament scene is probably of little interest to you, but it is for many players on the website. BGA has a wide variety of players ranging from casual gamers to more competitive, technical, serious players that perform well on 1 or more games ("good at games" people). Consider Elo as a tool for yourself and others to quickly identify similarly minded players and choose to play with them and restrict table access.

I would recommend playing at tables with 0-199 Elo players only for all games unless you are looking for a challenge, improve at the game, and learn how to play well from watching better players. This should provide more evenly matched games, which should be more enjoyable.

The Elo inflation/boosting thing is great exaggerated. It is much more rare on BGA than people seem to think it is. Especially with the ability of players to report it and having moderators take action. There is a much better way for any player to boost their Elo in a game, which is just getting good, VERY GOOD at the game and playing regularly against a variety of players, always looking to improve.

For some understanding of the leaderboard and competitive players on BGA, these players generally fit into a particular personality, profession, and skillset similar to other strategy games. Expect all the top players to be highly analytical, slow thinking types with education in STEM, computer science, statistics, data analysis. These players enjoy playing games for completely different reasons than a casual gamer. They will generally be kind people that want to play to win, think carefully, calculate everything optimally, min-max the game whenever possible. This is how they get enjoyment from the game. Lots of these players are looking for "mastery" rather than "glory" of being the #1 ranked player on BGA. They generally want to play their favorite games at the highest level and play against other similarly minded players also trying to play their best and win. If you are going for #1 Elo spot in a particular game, expect your toughest competition to be some engineer or computer scientist with very strong mental calculation skills and perhaps a detailed Excel sheet or custom program to reference while playing (not play for them). To quote Dennis Reynolds, they are trying to see how for they can go (with game mastery).

The satisfaction comes from playing the game with mastery and succeeding at the game against other strong players, not from simply being the #1 player. Being the #1 player is meaningless with difficult competition. With difficult competition becoming a top player is difficult and well-earned so I see nothing wrong with players achieving a high Elo and ranking that they've worked hard to earn and being proud of it. Of course this rating should be earned fairly, no manipulation by boosting or being selective with opponents. Ideally the top rank is earned by strong performance against other strong players rather than stomping on beginners over and over.

Most of these type of players would prefer to avoid playing casual players because they want to play against challenging opponents. With limited time for games, they would not want to waste time playing a skill based game against a significantly weaker opponent and having an easy win 90% of the time. That would be a waste of time for everyone IMO.

Regarding game design, most games are designed with good balancing to ensure that a variety of strategies are viable and that the gameplay is still enjoyable when played with a table of experienced players all trying to win. Otherwise, games quickly become stale once players discover a simple, dominant winning strategy. Also bad is when the winning strategy is completely opposed to the enjoyment of the player and/or the rest of the table. Most games on BGA seem to be interesting to play/watch at high level I find. Playing many games at a high level actually makes them more enjoyable because you can appreciate all the little details that went into the game.

Regarding reputation penalties, I think yours got reversed? Anyways your reputation seems to be fine. Sorry to hear your frustration with outages.

For time limits, all games should have a time limit unless all players agree to play without timer. This is to respect peoples' time. I find it frustrating when players play painfully slow at a table, less than 2 moves every 24 hours. I would recommend you always turn-based to avoid timeouts if you are struggling with the clock in real-time games. If the game might take more than 1 day, perhaps set playing hours so you can sleep/rest for 12h without running out of time.
