Why so many text changes?

Post by chibisake »

Allow me to write this text here, in the general section, as the translation sections are not as frequently visited, and I am feeling a bit frustrated after seeing how my translation work into Spanish has disappeared for two consecutive days.

To the programming team and those responsible for uploading the original texts: Please avoid making such drastic changes. On the day the game was featured on the homepage, I translated a total of 13 pages in one night—50 lines of text per page, plus subsequent proofreading.

The next day, I found that those 13 pages had been completely removed, along with the rewards for our dedication and hard work. The same 13 pages were added back, but with certain key words replaced by code.

I translated the 13 pages again, this time amidst the chaos of three other people joining in to translate. I focused on maintaining consistency and ensuring that recurring terms remained the same across different lines.

The following day, those 13 pages were removed again, leaving only 4. Hours and hours of work were completely erased.

I understand that changes may be necessary, but please keep in mind that these changes affect the work of others. And yes, I am aware that this is not your intention, and that BGA should ideally preserve the rewards for translations that are removed due to modifications of the original text. However, I kindly ask that you strive to minimize such changes as much as possible.

Despite my frustration, I want to thank you for your tremendous work. Without your contributions, it would be impossible for us to bring this game to players from other parts of the world.

Warm regards.

This is true not only for translations into Spanish, but also for translations into German (I did translate a huge part of the original 13 pages into German) and probably into many other languages.

Btw, please also read the discussion in the translation section for more details: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41562

I'm really sorry but manyvpeople ask me to simplify all the texts of the clue.

Because before it exists a lot of different sentences and now I use a different method to have way more less sentences.

Very sorry for that.

It's especially awful for BGA in that translations are community-sourced but the interface doesn't provide for coordination or reserving priority for your translations so multiple people translating at the same time leads to collisions.

Hi! Thanks for your answer. I've noticed that with terrain names, you added the article ("the Mud" instead of "Mud"). Would it also be possible to do the same with animal names? In some countries, we use different articles and have had to make some changes (e.g., using "Ophidia" instead of "Snake"), so including the article in the name could be really helpful for us (e.g., "The Monkey" instead of "Monkey").

Well, while I agree this is very frustrating and improvement would be welcome, don't forget a few things :
  • These changes are because the developer took care of an actual issue : WAY too many redudant strings to translate, meaning any change was requiring dozens of change, navigation among 13 pages, etc. (I did it too, so I'm perfectly aware of the pain it was)
  • The translation module of BGA is a bit old. Yes, we'd sometimes like to comment or debate about some translation, and can't unless we change it, AND the comment field is a bit buggy.
... but we gotta remember BGA is essentially a community driven website, with little funds. Improving all these areas while keeping the site functionnal after the HUGE growth they got around 2020 is a complex exercise.
  • We don't need to hurry for translating.
Unless you only do it for a few points (which TBH, is far from being worth the time spent), you don't have much reasons to rush translations.
If we do, we have to accept that change can just occur if necessary.
I think many strings will still need to be modified... I just wait a bit now ;)

I don't usually translate hastily, but when I do, I want to do it well—making sure the terms match and everything. If I translate a little and leave it for later... well, I end up with five different versions of a term and translators insisting on imposing their choice, even though another equally valid one had already been decided. Not to mention that if I go into hyperfocus, time flies for me, even though I end up exhausted afterward, so many times I translate, and time passes without me even noticing.
