Emerging Strategies

Post by JustinJR »

Hi all, I enjoy analysing the replays of top players and I would now like to share some findings. Some of the below you will simply see as common sense, but hopefully some of it will also improve your game. These are the emerging strategies of top players.

Below is in order of most popular monsters picked (all my stats are only based on players who have reached Top 5 in Arena over the last few weeks.)

Penguin: the luxury of 2 extra dice almost every turn is highly favoured. Many good players grab him instantly if going first.
Penguin is highly tactical, he can pursue pulls, damage, power/cards. And there are a few cards that are insanely powerful just for him. Hero cards are - Utter Destruction and Pellets. Grab them any time (shuffle them out for 2 power if you are vs Penguin immediately.)
Vs Cyber Kitty focus on winning reasonably fast, try to always have 7-8 dice and go for big pulls or big damage. If you end up with money buy pulls and damage. Need to finish the game before Kitty gets set up with lots of cards. Buy your hero cards too if can.
Vs Meka Dragon don’t focus on pulls, focus on smashing Meka, heals and purchasing heals and keeping 2 extra dice almost every turn as much as possible. Of course if you roll an insane pull take it. Goal is to kill Meka or have him so low he has to focus too much on heals.

Cyber Kitty: second most popular monsters picked in my stats. Top players mostly choose him vs Penguin and he is a close second choice vs Meka Dragon. (Penguin number one)
Kitty’s main focus is buying cards unless she finds Electrical Aura - the card that pulls for every 7 power kept in which case she tries to keep power in the ‘kitty’ haha.
Kitty wants cards that reward buying cards or discount buying cards. She will also go very high with bank then go on a ‘shopping spree’ looking for pull cards or hero cards.
Vs Penguin survive while focusing on money then burst through the cards looking for your hero cards - electrical aura or Breaking News.
Vs Meka Dragon don’t focus on pulls until you have a steady supply of health based cards or have acquired an overwhelming library of cards while focusing on healing. Remember please, this is a basic strategy, if you roll an amazing pull take it. But always stay above 7, preferably 9 health.

Meka Dragon. Very straight forward strategy. Go for max damage while also denying health cards where possible. If you can get scrappy or extra head you areawrecking ball with extra dice. You can kill someone at full health with 7 dice in one turn kill. If playing vs Gigasuar take pulls if you get 3 of a star or building. It is a race vs that monster. If you don’t average 4 hits a turn in your games you will probably lose vs the above monsters.

Gigasuar. Keep ! Over actual buildings and stars unless you roll 2-3 in your first roll. ! Get you pulls for less dice freeing you up to get hits, power cubes and more !.
Buy pulls. Keep an eye out for an early 8 power if the Stadium card that pulls both fame and destruction 2 spaces is offered early. Your goal is to get both of these into the gold zone before any of the above monsters get into their groove. You have a better chance of winning early with much reduced chances if the game goes long. Focusing inthe fame track (star) is strongest because there are very few cards opponents can buy to pull it back from you. With the destruction track they can pull you back often with easy to find cards.
If Kitty gets Electric Aura just go ham on fame track and try win that fast.

Alienoid. Not very popular among top players but I have seen it picked if going second pick and Penguin is taken. His special skill asks too much of the ! Rolls to really offer any good burst turns.

The King. Unseen. Easy to override his ability by either filling up your tracks with buzz tokens before moving or buying cards that pull after your roll moves you onto his token. King is best off using tokens on his side of the tracks defensively to stop opponent pulling them back to midway. This also forces opponent to place good buzz tokens on the King’s side of the tracks.

General tips
- Try to always have a spare 2 power cubes free to remove cards that help your opponent too much.
-Wait till you have 10+ power before wiping the card row so that you can still afford to buy an expensive card if it comes on offer.
- Pulling the fame track has the advantage that there are very few discard cards that allow your opponent to pull it back in his direction, whereas the destruction track can be manipulated by discard cards very easily.
-If you are going to buy the cards in the first and second slot ALWAYS buy the discounted one first so they both cost 1 less each.
- Keep health above 7 preferably 9 vs Meka and grab any health cards.
- Natural Selection combos well with Titanic Batteries.
- Dice tokens are gold, learn which cards give dice buzz tokens and/or extra dice next round.
- if you have only 2 dice to roll on your last roll it is unlikely you will get what you are looking for so it could be better to keep them if they are generally useful like heal, damage or power.
- Some cards are worth buying purely for the token they offer, for example cards that allow you to shorten the distance on one of your tracks or lengthen the distance on an opponents track. This is only worth pursuing if it adds pressure though.
- Try not to wipe the card row too much, 2 power is a lot. Buying Alien Metabolism is great because it allows you to deny cards for free for the rest of the game. When you buy AM you are effectively removing 2 cards from the row, AM it’s self plus the one you remove with its power. It is insane value if in slot one as only costs 1!
- If you are likely to lose the game next turn spend all your power cycling through cards to see if you can find a Hail Mary. It is super fun when you pull it off!

Cheers everyone and happy rolling!

Really nice summary! I agree with everything here. If I would have read this when I started I wouldn’t have blindly bashed my head against the wall with mekadragon for so many games lol
