learning/playing companions?

Post by richyfourtytwo »

I recently stumbled 1st across this game and later across https://hanabi.github.io/. Now I'm looking for turn-based players who like me are beginners and would like to play and step by step follow the H-Group learning path (slowly!). Play, occasionally discuss and advance on the path when everyone is comfortable. Players should be forgiving to other's mistakes. (I think I'm a decent card player having played Bridge on club level for more than a decade, but oh you should see the stupid stuff I play in The Crew when distracted!) My preferred time setting is 2 days per move, but I play A LOT quicker usually, I just don't like time-outs when surprisingly being offline for a few days, which does happen, but not often.

If you are interested, get in touch. Even if this post is a few weeks or months old already, I don't expect I'll be overwhelmed with responses.

Hello, in that same link, at the start of the conventions you got a page 'About' that you should read. Oh but it's only real time, so you need at least 1 hour free.

If you still wanna play on bga, so without review, with an harder time to review games, with a lot less players... I think you should try to find friends and play a lot with the same people (which you just did with that subject :) ).

Conventions are much more complicated, and bga's replay is pretty meh, while the replay of the other site is amazing. And reviewing the game it what make you improve and understand conventions.

edit: you got only two games of Hanabi on your profile. You could instead just play with bga's conventions which are much simpler ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Vzg ... Mlyhc/edit# )(don't be scared of the number of pages, it's separed in 3 mains sections: under expert, above expert, and to optimise).
You will find more people there, and there is many similitudes between both documents anyway. Just some specific things (occupied play clue, layered finesse, 2-saves, color save...) are different.

Thx, understood, makes sense. But I play many other games here too and don't want to have to switch to yet another site.

if u are looking to learn and improve at the game (which, from ur post, looks like u are) i highly recommend playing on hanablive. even though it does not offer games other than Hanabi, it is far superior to BGA.
1. game history - at any time during or after the game, u can replay the game turn-by-turn from the start (or from a specific turn) by simply using left/right arrow keys. this encourages a "post-game review" culture, and indeed many people who play there try to review every game after it is over, which makes it a lot easier & faster to learn.
2. better UI, including ability to do hypothetical plays from a specific turn.
3. automatic tracking of negative clues - all cards that were in ur hand when u received a blue play clue automatically become "not blue" after the clue, and u can easily see that several turns later even after u have played all your blue cards.
4. ability to take notes on cards - if u write "b3" on your card that card will now look like exact b3, but only to u!
5. the conventions are much more structured than what BGA has. here there is essentially no structure at all, just a few "standard" rules like finesse, bluff, "number to chop means save", etc. but players on hanablive account for many more edge-case scenarios and clearly define what certain "confusing" looking clues mean.
6. (arguably the most important reason of all haha) its free! no need for any sort of premium membership, everyone can create or join games for free.

i have been playing there for a bit over 2 years now, and i still play a lot of other games (including Hanabi lol) here on BGA. its pretty easy to switch between the two sites, especially when creating an account is free.
