Selecting top train car

I am playing on my iPhone - I have not been able to select the top train car. I get different pop up messages - one time a route was chosen for me instead. Not quite sure what is happening or if it’s because I’m on my phone. Any suggestions?

i have the same and use horizontal orientation to avoid this
