Creating 1 forum per game

Post by sourisdudesert »

Hi,

Following a suggestion: do you feel the need to have 1 forum for each game on BGA (ie: 70 new forums) ?

Thank you for your opinion.

Yes.
While the interface is going to be hectic, and there are situations that will cover multiple games (the current discussions/suggestions forums), there are also times when messages get lost because the people who play a particular game don't visit the forums that often.

Also, it would be easier to resolve the "Is this a bug, or is this something I don't understand about the rules?" posts.

If BGAers are active in discussing their favorite games, this is fine.. Otherwise it'll be barren.

Though would be helpful to the developers.

If created i do recommend that the game forums are placed under the strategy forum (mb change name to something like game discussions). Rather than have them all placed on the main forum page. When the list gets to long to your opinion mb an idea is to make some alphabetical headers first, like:

Code: Select all

Strategy
   |--> Games a-h
             |--> Amyitis
                       |--> player posts
             |-->Armadöra
                       |--> player posts
             |-->Assyria
                       |--> player posts
             |-->Backgammon
                       |--> player posts
             |--> etc
                       |--> player posts
   |--> Games i-m
              |--> you get,
                        |-->the idea.
Also, again if created, would be great if you get a link to the specific game forum from all game overview pages and from the game tables. like next to the bug link a link to the relative forum. I reckon that such links could boost the usage of said forums quite a bit. Only problem i can see is that you're going to compete with the game groups you tried to establish. But to be honest ever since these game groups have been created i have never used them, and i've never seen any post being made in any of these groups, although i might play the wrong games :). The forum has better structure and order for finding topics already posted then the group (just long list you can scroll down) and as such a forum for each game has my preference over a group for each game. Only nice thing about group is possibility to do a live chat to all online members and ask if some1 wants to play but as this neglates the "want to play" lists of all players you probs spam to many people not interested at that moment and as such i never used it that way ^^.

Anyhow that were some of my thoughts about game specific forums i do think it could create quite some order in bug, questions and strategy posts. While also making sure that you can easily retrieve relative data if you want to play a new game and are looking for some strategy to use. However, for it to work (active usage) i do think you'll need to do some good advertisment for them throughout the site like a link to the relative forums from each game page etc. Especially when chosing to have a few headers, as the example above, as in this case peeps will more likely find the right forums through the links for the first time. You probably keep some games that stay empty for long time as they are not that popular but thats something you can live with i think.

Cheers,
Sawyer

I agree with much of what Sawyer Einherjar said. In order for the separate forum for each game to be successful, I think they need to be more prominently linked from the game page. Maybe show the titles of the three most recent posts to that game's forum or something? I like the forums here, but they're not used nearly enough in their current forum. Just an average of a new post every day or two. Hopefully we get some more activity!

I prefer that the forum can be checked in forum index... I think that 70 forums aren't SO LONG, at least phpBB hasn't a bad interface for lot of forums.

I approve of this. The forums as they are are fairly disorganized. I guess it's to be seen whether it would increase forum posts.
