Are you sure their reputation was too low 24h before the tournament start?

As far as I know you won't be expelled from a tournament once it starts, even if your reputation tanks while you're in it.

It’s hard to tell their reputation at start of tournament or 24h before looking back. I will need to find an example of it happening live and report back. Can’t give links to player profiles but I can DM you and link tournament.

I am highly suspicious based on how much lower rep the players are than the tournament requirement. Maybe they tank A LOT from too many tournament sign ups, idk.

It’s hard to spot if someone gets kicked out because withdrawal prior to tournament start does not show up.

It can happen. I was in a tournament in which a player suddenly stopped making moves and after a while I checked their profile and I saw that they had not connected to BGA for days, which turned into weeks. They were in several tournaments and other turn-based games, so as time went on their reputation started dipping as they got expelled from more and more games.

I don't think it was malicious. I was actually concerned for their health.

Yeah players often just drop off entirely, can be concerning at times. It certainly happens it’s just hard to catch.

The tournament game penalties are so lax combined with organizers putting low rep requirements are per BGA guidelines. Can they update karma requirements? How is 85% very high? That’s bare minimum IMO. 65% rep tournaments are everywhere and that’s way too low to kick out inactive tournament users in a timely manner so we see it less than we should.

Kinda nuts how someone can miss 3+ games in row over 3 months in a tournament and still have reasonable rep. -12 penalty for 3 in a row is nothing. A player could do this for 2-3 tournaments and still stay over 65% for a while. There should be escalated penalties

I think tournament penalties may be lower because tournaments can result in lots of players running out of time (often without meaning to). My first tournament, I thought the timing was 12h per move, not 12h total for the entire game. I was out of time within the first day of the game.

Now I don't play anything less than 48h per player (usually preferring 72h per player), but I still regularly get timed out due to timing issues (players who play in the early part of my sleep period). I'm on here 4+ times per day, but that does nothing in a tournament setting - if the other player is missing during my daytime hours, we both run our clocks out, and if they're present, I get a couple moves in, only to lose another 5+ hours overnight. I don't run out of time in regular games very often (only when life REALLY gets in the way, and I don't get on for over 24h) but I run out in tournaments regularly. Escalating penalties would be the final nail in the coffin for me playing tournaments at all.

I do get what you're saying about no-shows, but that's a very different penalty to someone who is doing their best to play regularly but their timing doesn't fall evenly with their opponents. I used to think this was a timezone issue, but as someone pointed out, even for 4 players in the same timezone, someone eventually goes to sleep, someone else becomes the last player of the day, and their clock ticks all night. Yes, playing hours exist, but I've never seen a tournament where half the playing period wasn't during my sleep time anyway, so if anything, that would just be worse. Unfortunately there isn't a way to distinguish between someone who never shows up at all, and someone who is doing their absolute best and playing turns regularly, but is just unlucky with the timing.
