I also think the purple smileys don't look great due to the low contrast.
Here is a second version which also better fits the dark mode theme (plus it's my favourite colour!)
+ improvements to specific smileys. Feedback welcome!

I 100% agree with what ShassDow said. Why not use the original colors (i.e. left column) by default in both light and dark mode? If you like a different color, it could be done as an option.

Here are 4 reasons for using the original colors:
- The color of the text is high-contrast anyway, so using low-contrast meeples is moot
- The left column looks much better and is consistent with the BGA original intent
- People are used to yellow smileys. A smiley in a different color makes me think of a "sick" emoji, for example: 🤢
- Yellow is the standard color for smileys, which is why Windows uses the same yellow color for smileys in both light and dark mode. Here's a screenshot of smileys on Windows in dark mode: https://ibb.co/7xqMdv2k

I agree it is important to retain the original meaning. Since yellow is associated with happiness and blue with sadness, I also agree that yellow should be the default for light and dark mode.
But I personally will continue to enjoy my cyan smileys!

Below are the results of a study into how Color Affects Recognition of Emoticon Expressions.
It is quite interesting to me that I personally dislike yellow emojis and cyan is my favourite colour, given I have had depression for many years.
