2 Player Basic Strategy Guide

Post by BananaHarambe »

Hello Everyone,

Here's a link to a new 2 Player Basic Strategy Guide on the Vale of Eternity wiki. It's for competitive play and is applicable for Arena and tournament games.

https://valeofeternity.wiki.gg/wiki/2_P ... tegy_Guide

Here's the General Game Tips from the page:

1) Remember your opponent's cards in hand. For real time use Notepad app or pen and paper. For turn-based games use the in-game notepad on BGA.com.

2) NEVER summon a card without a real purpose. The card must either provide an immediate benefit (e.g. sand timer effect) or is being summoned "early" to avoid wasting stones due to the holding limit of 4.

3) Related to above, holding stones going into the next round is GOOD. It allows tamed cards from the next round to be summoned immediately, giving more options to summon cards that synergize well.

4) Think carefully about your picks! Picking the correct cards is more than half of the skill in this game (>=60%). The remaining <=40% of the game skill is using the cards you picked to their best potential. Close games are often won/lost on 1-2 bad picks from one player.

5) When picking first, bias towards picking a card that is wanted by both players over a card only good for yourself. Either you get the card only good for you passed back (wheeled, often getting your 1st and 2nd best cards) or your opponent wastes a pick on a card that's only good for you, weakening themselves.

6) When picking second and third, bias towards passing the opponent a worthless card (to them) for taming, ideally one with weak sell value as well. It's usually a bad idea to let your opponent first pick their best card and pass them back (wheel) their second most wanted card.

7) Area space is limited so be careful using cards that "waste space" by neither scoring significantly or netting a significant amount of stones. They will often harm you more than help you. Examples are Willow, Hestia, Hippogriff, and Hydra.

8) Remember that the Remove Action can be used to remove a card in your area by paying stones equal to the round number. This action is best with excess stones when space is limited. Best rounds to remove are usually Round 3 (often removing Hydra) or Round 6 (often Willow or another Dragon) since removal can still be done on a single stone. Removals on Round 7+ are very expensive so plan ahead and consider doing it Round 6.

9) Be flexible with the cards provided, don't expect to get any one specific card later. A strategy that can use a variety of different scoring cards to win is much more reliable than a specific scoring combo.

10) Drawing cards is good, but not THAT good compared to other card games. Cards that draw cards are appropriately costed (balanced), space for summoning cards is limited (equal to Round number), and synergy/combos are important in this game so many cards drawn are not helpful and go unused. Going "all-in" with multiple card draw effects is usually a trap because it often leaves a player short on stones, points, and space required to make it to 60 points.

11) Tame and hold high instant scoring cards (>=10) at all stages of the game and wait for late game to summon for optimal/max points. You can't just rely on picking them in the late game, players will be fighting for them and they might not show up on time so consider picking them up earlier than they're needed.

12) If unsure which family/strategy to lean towards, follow your stone generators. Cards in the Fire, Water, or Earth families play best with their respective stones (1,3,6).

13) Active (sand timer) cards or cheap recover cards (e.g.Imp, Undine) should be evaluated based on their effect (points, stones, cards) multiplied by how many rounds they are expected to activate (with benefit) in your area.

More details with card images can be found at the link. https://valeofeternity.wiki.gg/wiki/2_P ... tegy_Guide

There is a link to a visual gallery of all 70 cards as well.

An advanced strategy guide is also underway, check back every few weeks for any updates.
