If I make a Group Stage tournament with Stage 1 Swiss and Stage 2 Single Elimination will the seeding for the single elimination be based on ranking in the Swiss groups? Will rankings be reset and seeding is based on ELO?

It would be nice if it seeded the highest performing players in the Swiss so they can get a bye in single elimination when there's an uneven number of players for the bracket.

I don't know, but my guess is, probably not.

I suspect that yes, this is what will happen. See the posts by Sprockitz in this 2021 thread: viewtopic.php?p=89480#p89480 Has there been any change to the algorithm in the 3½ years since then?

Similar to the point made upthread by Oxmeister: viewtopic.php?p=188297#p188297 (which never received a definitive answer).

Questions like this, BGA admins usually do not answer in the forums. You can ask through support tickets, but even then, I would not be confident that the answer you receive is accurate. The best way to get an answer to questions like yours is to run a small tournament and test it out. (Then please report your conclusions back here.)

Thank you Mathew5000. We are running more Group Stage Swiss right now to test it out over the next 1-3 months. We would like only 1 group for stage 1, but that's not allowed at the moment. Related bug report is here for anyone to help thumbs up.

Hello Mathew5000, I've done some digging to find group stage pairing examples from completed tournaments and there appears to be a good, but not perfect seeding algorithm for going from Group stage to single elimination.

I could only find examples where organizers made clear SE brackets in multiples of 2. Here are some examples:
https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=335720 Azul tournament with 2 people from 8 groups advanced. 1st and 2nd places are always separated, but players from the same group may play each other, might not. Sometimes you get a nicely scattered bracket, sometimes you don't.

https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=334345 an uneven and large Can't stop tournament with 96 player advanced! All 1st places got a SE bye along with some 2nd places, seemingly at random. Appears to work as expected/intended.

https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=333657 a Solstis tournament with 60 players, 4 groups of 15. Round robin with 4 from each group advancing. The SE brackets are set up so that 1st and 4th players play each other and the winner of the 1st/4th always plays a 2nd/3rd winner. It unfortunately didn't separate players from the same initial groups in the SE seeding, but other than that it made nice pairings.

Now for my upcoming tournament I now know what to expect. See the link for the setup: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=335519
2 groups of Swiss with 7 from each group advancing. I expect the tournament to be full 64/64 or at least close which means that after the 5 rounds of Swiss there should be 1 5-0 player from each group and they would be ranked highest in the second stage pairings and should get a bye as I planned.

Due to only having 2 groups and player rankings range from 1-7 it should keep the players of the same rankings separated from each other when it draws the brackets. We will see how it's implemented once the Swiss is done. Should be available December 26 so come check back!

Hello Matthew5000, I can gladly report that seeding works quite well for my two group Swiss into single elimination tournament, link here: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=335519

As intended, the 5-0 players from the 32 player groups got 1st place and got byes and proper seeding into the single elimination finals. The SE pairings have been cross group (I think by luck rather than forced) and also based on standings following a correct seeding procedure. It correctly made 2 brackets of 7 with the winners of those playing in finals.

With 1st getting a bye, 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th, 4th plays 5th with the winner playing 1st. The brackets are easy to see in the link above.

I am pleasantly surprised with this outcome :) if anyone has any questions about how to arrange a good Swiss group stage with a seeded top 8 cut, let me know. Settings for this 2p tournament were maximum 64 players, 2 groups, 5 match swiss, 7 from each group qualify, finals SE. It’s an effective way to do a “Double Elimination “ style tournament since you always have a chance to recover from 1 loss in your first 5 matches. If you win all 5 in Swiss you get a nice reward of a bye in SE and seeded pairings.

Good morning,

In case of a 2player Swiss tournament made of X games, if neither of the two players does join the next game to be played, how much time does it take before the tournament is closed?

Thanks

Hello, my understanding is that joining your assigned tournament games in mandatory. If you are online when assigned a match, you can join or "snooze". All a snooze does is delay the game starting by 1 hour. Both players automatically join the game after 1 hour.

Why my takenoko tournament disappeared from the list

Post by Rango64 »

A few days ago I set up a tournament in Takenoko, with 32 participants.

Yesterday the tournament was still on the list and almost full, but today it is not on the list, what happened?
