Arena Gold and Silver removed, game demoted?

Post by BananaHarambe »

My favourite game had an arena change from 3 players to 2 players and the silver and gold tiers were removed. Players are going directly from bronze to Elite, which is really fast now with 2p and the real time arena queueing actually working.

Only 18 players were elite last season and number of games dropped drastically because 3p was less popular and harder to match a table. Previous season had over 100 elite.

Did the game get “demoted” for the season for low player count? I assume there’s a system and it should correct for next season.

I wouldn't call it a demotion, but yes, it's a change. Arena settings changes like player count are voted on by gurus (those who have played the game most, either in or outside Arena). So maybe that's what happened, gurus voted for 2-player instead of 3 players? The number of leagues depends on last season's number of active players. So it is actually connected: if, with 3-player settings, you get very few players, then for next season, you get fewer leagues. Perhaps the gurus also decided for 2-player because there were too few players for 3-player settings.

If this season you get more players and games in Arena, the game will also get more leagues for next season.

(Also, you should name which game is it to spare others having to go through your match history to figure out it is Vale of Eternity https://boardgamearena.com/gamepanel?ga ... ofeternity .)

Sorry for being so cryptic, yes Vale of Eternity.

What I think happened is that 3 player arena was narrowly voted in after being 2p for 9 months and most players not being around for it. 3 player arena happened and was quite unpopular overall so less games were played, less people got elite and players overwhelmingly voted for 2 player again.

Some combination of number of games, number of elite players and/or number of players participating must have crossed a low threshold that made the game qualify for only bronze and elite based on popularity.

For games with more than gold before elite, does that get voted on by gurus or is that based only on popularity? I’ve only seen extra tiers on a few other games. It seems quite uncommon. Kinda surprised some fast games like Faraway don’t have an extra tier.

The only thing gurus can vote on are user selectable options available when you set up a game yourself. I mean game options like player count and expansions, not ELO filters obviously.

I don’t mean ELO filters, I mean number of Arena tiers, Aka gold, silver bronze. When I was Elite I could filter by Elo, not Arena tier.

Do players ever have a choice to add an extra arena tier? For example, can players ever vote to add diamond tier to a game with just gold?

It’s not important at all, just curious. Getting to Elite is always trivial for anyone going to leaderboard and the seasonal AES is all the matters in the end. The different tiers are just hiding the AES that’s “under the hood” the whole time.

ELO filters do not apply in Arena. Anything you observed was coincidence.

To make it clear, gurus cannot vote on the number of tiers because the number of Arena tiers is not an option in setting up a non-Arena game. Only things you can select from menus when hosting a non-Arena table are available to be voted on, but not all things. I only referred to ELO filters to clarify that not all options you have available in setting up a non-Arena game can be voted on by gurus.

As has been said, this isn't up to gurus. My understanding is it is based on number of players for Arena for that game, but I think it's a manually configured thing. I think I've seen comments about tiers being added by someone associated with BGA, possibly in the new Arena season announcements or something.

Could totally be a coincidence , that’s right. It was about 7 games in a row with only 200+ ELO with me trying to filter 100-199 average players out. That was enough to make me think it works but not proof.

I will try more extreme filtering in a week or 2 and see what happens.
