Is the Arena award system explained anywhere?

I just lost a game to a player with an ELO 80-100 points higher than me and yet I lost FIVE stars to the next level. They won fairly easily, something like 130-90, but I don't think I've ever lost 5 stars on a single game before.

It's explained in the site FAQ, which is linked at the bottom of nearly every page of the site. Your non-Arena ELO has zero effect on how many stars you gain or lose in an Arena match. It's a completely separate system.
