Who creates tournaments?

Post by ap_seidel »

I was confused by the "Tournaments I created" check-box when searching through tournaments. Do I have the power to create a tournament? If not, who does? There seems to be a lot of user-created tournaments in these forums, rather than in the tournament section of the site. Are tournaments created as of now only by BGA? If so, could a framework for user-created tournaments be possible in the future? Even if only angels could create them or some other restriction were in place, it would still be an awesome addition to this site, if it's not already included.

Another side-note: a tournament would be really fun for some games which require more than two people to play. These tournaments are certainly possible, the bracket would just have to be adjusted to accommodate that number of people. For instance, for games of 3 people, a good bracket size would be 27, with 3 in the final, 9 in the semi-final, and 27 in the first round. I have noticed a number of games have never had any tournaments (such as one of my favorites, Puerto Rico), and I figured this might be a reason why (although this site does support 2-player PR games so I'm not sure???).

Some tournaments (Daily Meeple) are created by the site.

Then, BGA admins decided that they would put in a framework to allow others to create tournaments.

Then, BGA admins got busy with other projects. :(

The latest I have heard is that it is still "on the list", but it is pretty far down the list. Hence the rise of the unofficial tournaments in these forums.

There were some other aspects of it too that may still need to be worked out. I remember that there was one worldwide tournament that the game distributor wanted to have on BGA. The results of that tournament may be affecting development strategies.
