Disgraceful Ark Nova

Post by hvj17 »

Just my opinion. I hosted the game. It was on Beginner. These two booted me at -10 seconds. *

*

I was having a good time. I’m sure they would likely win. Why kick? Just shameful.

You made a "mistake" and you lost. Where's the problem?

If you need more time, set the game at slower pace. If you don't want to ever be expelled, set it to friendly mode. Otherwise, the time per turn is a rule of the game, and if you don't respect it you can lose, even if you're a beginner, even if you host the table, even if you think you're winning.

This topic has been discussed very controversial. While there is a fraction of player saying time limit is a part of the rules and if you take too long you lose, there are other who think time limit should be respected but not on the second precise and also not on the first time.
I can understand both sides: If you allow some extra time, how much is too much? And if not, is a longer action (e.g., two turns and more to do on each one) or when you need to read lots of cards / face technical issues really a reason to lose a game and is this way of playing/winning making anyone having fun?
In total we will never have an agreement of the whole community on this one - sadly.

anyone kicking you for being 10 seconds over one time is a total jerk, don't care what others say. i wait like 2 minutes, throw a message in chat, and chill for a bit after that. Who wants to win that way?

I'm sorry that happened to you. That's very poor behavior.

So, where do you draw the line?

That's the thing, responses like this have as an unstated major premise that they have drawn the line in the right place. It therefore follows that everyone who draws the line elsewhere is wrong. In other words, the line has to be drawn somewhere, and that somewhere is where I drew it...."because I say so."

Who's to say you aren't supposed to wait 4 minutes, then convert the game to turn-based (which you can do unilaterally if you are the only person who isn't out of time)? I've done that before, but I'm not arrogant enough to suggest that this is what everyone is supposed to do.

I understand what you are trying to say, but I don't think that logic holds up to scrutiny. No one seems to be proposing being completely dogmatic about setting an immutable line. Rather, they seem to be saying (correctly in my opinion) that there is no compelling argument for booting someone after 10 seconds. No one's time is that valuable, and no one is gaining some huge competitive advantage by going 10 seconds over time. To boot someone that fast, the person has to be hovering over the mouse waiting for their opponent's time to expire, likely for no other reason than to score an imaginary ranking in a game with no money or any other meaningful stakes on the line. That feels petty and poor sportsmanship, especially in a game like Ark Nova with a somewhat clumsy interface for placing unique buildings. There are also so many reasons outside the game that someone might need to pause briefly - someone calls, someone is at their door, their internet goes down temporarily etc. Isn't everyone there to play the game? If someone isn't routinely going well over time and doesn't abandon the game for minutes on end, it seems overzealous to suggest they should be kicked out for going 10 seconds over time once. And yes, it's fine to draw the line somewhere more reasonable - we can have a good conversation and disagree about where - but I don't think the kind of behavior OP is describing should be condoned at all by BGA.

It's all situational, if its 2 minutes into the game, im probably not gonna worry to much about it, but if we have been playing for an hour or more, im probably gonna give'em at least 5 minutes and a couple of messages before i even think about hitting that skip player button
