So many keyboard warriors on here

Post by Rexi-Lee »

I’ve been on here 2 weeks x it’s a game platform that should be for fun but I’ve come across so many irritating people on here and it’s spoiling games - yes a game platform means it’s for fun not sheep stations! If people can’t be nice then play arena to be competitive. Leave the other play games to those of us who just want to fill in time with our love for board games that we maybe can’t play in person. I don’t play arena because I’m not interested in cutthroat games but if you are someone who just gets on here to flounce everyone who is learning new games then I just ask you consider what that is actually achieving for everyone involved.

I'm a little unsure as your point given that your title talks about something different (misuse of the chat) from the rest of your post (competitive play).

On the former, I totally agree that the chat should only be used for friendly chat, salutations etc , but I've played over 800 games on here and I can count the number of times on one hand where somebody has send a bad message , and none of those were that egregious either.

Regarding competitive play, I see your point that there is already a dedicated play mode for that, but even in "play" mode many play board games with the objective to win, and that's a normal motivation.

My best suggestion would be to :
a) When setting up a table modify the table to exclude players above a certain rank (say 300), who are likely competitive about that game
b) Set up 'groups' with players you get on well with , maybe you'll be able to create games amongst yourself.

I'm not sure what else can be done.

You can set up games in friendly mode so when you don't like how the opponent is playing, you can just leave without karma penalty. Also competitive players don't usually join friendly mode games.

You find many competitive players outside of arena because arena has fixed settings that don't suit everyone.

Also the amount of games you need to play to achieve anything in arena is very high. If you want to play 1 competitive game per week, then arena is no reasonable competitive environment for you. So these players stick to normal mode with elo on (not friendly game mode).
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

Good point ,I hadn't considered friendly mode as I only use that one with Friends, but I can see how it'd potentially help the OP find better suited playing partners.

Also agree with your thoughts about Arena - I love the concept but playing in a 'league' of several thousand players doesn't really work for me so I rarely play it.

The best way to solve it would be an option to deactivate all chats, if you don't want to get any messages... I really miss a button or an option in settings to deactivate all chats except games with friends.

After I joined last year I discovered very quick that it's kind of rare to just learn a game then hop on a table and get a victory. I mean sometimes that happens, sometimes you luck out or sometimes your opponent just shoots themselves in the foot enough that you win. Most of the time though you need to do your research so you can get that amazing WIN and continue to win. So read/watch strategy guides, figure out the meta, watch replays of top players, watch your own replays to analyze why you won and why you lost etc.

So I know it can be frustrating sometimes that BGA for the most part is very competitive even on "play" tables, but on the bright side it makes the feeling of a win so amazing because you know that you had to work hard for it. So that's what I enjoy about it. Also it's very fun and fascinating to figure out the formula to score really well in a game and thus get more victories!

I have had many good chats with people I absolutely don't know. Next to that almost never any negativity in chat, barring some exceptions. But nothing worth reporting. So for myself I'd definitely feel like I'm missing out on some potentially great chats by excluding chat from all my games which are not with my friends. To each their own of course.

I'm so surprised to hear this. I guess I don't play often enough to get all these chats? Everyone I've chatted with has been so nice and it has been very rare that someone started to chat with me. It's never been negative. Maybe I got lucky. You can also review these players for yourself so you know not to play with them again, give them that red thumbs down. I would play a friendly turn based game with you! Crafting the Cosmos?
