It has to do with the context in the political climate in North America. You can't simply dismiss people's current feelings because the event isn't affecting you. And yes, I know many people that don't want to play Secret Hitler based on the theme alone.
Puerto Rico has also had an entirely new updated version done, because people were upset how they portrayed slaves as "workers". Heck, even the "thief" in Catan is no longer a black token.
These things matter to people and I think it's disingenuous to shrug it off and say "you're too sensitive". People's feelings are legitimate, whether you understand and can relate or not.
For me, the game in of itself is not offensive. I know it's been around for years, and I am familiar with the title. But BGA releasing it now is a big screw up on their part imho. It shows tone deafness and yes, I understand that these things are in development for months if not years. BGA could have released the game port now and addressed the current climate with a message. Instead they decided to ignore that, just plop this on their front page and walk away.
There are many people on BGA who are not deep into the board gaming world and have never heard of this game. So immediately it's going to feel hurtful to them to see this message in giant letters on the front page of BGA.
The fact that it's been a day later, and this thread is 66 messages deep now, and still nothing from BGA or "Dr. Click" who posted the original message is very telling.
