Going for the less dice rolling part, I'd suggest Obsession or Newton.

Those games are a lot more complex than Catan and Thurn und Taxis, so I’m not sure they fit in what Fizzy_Soda is looking for.

The problem now is, you're ignoring the "older German style" aspect. Or to the OP, does that simply mean simple rules and little luck (but Catan has luck)?

Yes, that's the question. I am German and I know a lot of pre-2000 games, from Memory to El Grande, and I simply can't identify what they all should have in common (and more recent games haven't). That's why I asked for more information. Let's see what Fizzy_Soda says!

Catan is a pre-Euro style game in keeping with older Waddingtons or Parker Brothers offers (its literally a redesign of Monopoly).

okay, so.... the term "euro style" and "german style" encompasses much more than I thought. Also, I appreciate Cigma's point about dice rolling -- I'd say let's just forget that I mentioned anything about dice rolling.

Here are a list of games that I have recently played and immensely enjoyed:
Thurn und Taxis
Die Säulen von Venedig
Tikal
Dracula vs Van Helsing
small world

I am currently playing Carneige and Terraforming Mars. I like both, but I don't think I can handle learning another heavy game like those at the moment. I'm still trying to understand the strategy in those two.

If you like Tikal, you can try Mexica, its sister game. Rules are about the same level (and overlap a bit). I tend to think of it as more "fun" while Tikal is more of a chin-stroker, but the differences aren't great.

Maybe Iwari or Kingdom Builder. The former is area majority, but also has card drafting and route building (kind of). KB has special powers and network building.
