Confused about playing hours

Post by CanonNi »

I don't play a lot of "quick" turn-based games, and I've always been confused about playing hours of 8/12/24 move-per-day games. My questions are:
  • Does time freeze completely for players who are "sleeping"? Or do new moves add time as usual?
  • What time zone is the clock based on? Local time of the host, each individual player, or UTC?
  • Does each player have their own clock, or is it synchronized for everyone?
Cuz I recently played a 12 move per day game, and the times were just... weird.

As far as I noticed, the clock freezes. You can make moves, but time is neither added nor removed.

The time is displayed in your local time (or whatever your computer/device/browser/BGA thinks is your local time). A table that looks 8-20 to you could be 17-5 to someone else.
Does each player have their own clock, or is it synchronized for everyone?
The playing hours are "simultaneous", all players are expected to play during the same 12-hour period, regardless of how those times are labelled in their local times. Each player has their own timer, but when it's "sleep" time for one, it's sleep time for everyone.

I'm pretty sure time is getting added back for each turn during sleep hours.

But everything else you said looks correct to me. :)

Edit: yeah, I just checked my correct 24 turn/day game, and my last turn was during sleep hours, and I definitely took more than a minute to take the turn, but I'm maxed at 12 hours, so time got added during my sleep hours.

If I have only 1 hour left on my clock, and I make a move halfway through the "sleep" period, it isn't going to forfeit me on time one hour after the sleep period ends. That wouldn't make much sense.

It would be useful if people could choose their own sleep period to be within a certain amount of hours from what the game starter chooses. Maybe within 4 hours.

I know it would make it pointless if people could choose their own sleep period with no restriction- particularly if they make it off by 12 hours. But allowing it to be off by up to 4 hours could still be helpful.
