Is it fair play?

Post by KKristaps »

One of the players (far from being in top 100) did admit that he has another account, which is top ranked and from which he does not play any more, to save his rating points and ranking. I don`t understand why multiple accounts are allowed at all.

Since we're on the topic of so-called fair play in Bang, I want to clarify what fair play actually means, not what some people fantasize about. Fair play means not playing with two accounts at the same table, not creating new accounts every two days to avoid the reputation system, and not giving your teammates hints on what to do or what cards to play. That's what you should focus on. When you play honestly, without revealing your role in personal messages or cheating with multiple accounts at the same table, that's fair play. Smurfing doesn't harm anyone in this game. In other games, smurfing might hurt weaker players by letting stronger players dominate lower ranks, but that doesn't happen here. So, let's not make up problems where they don't exist.

Terms of use: "not to create several Accounts: the User undertakes to create only one Account corresponding to them."

I'm against multiple accounts. In every online videogame I played, it was forbidden to have more than one account. Some players still would have more than one but once it's found the player's accounts (all of them) were typically banned. So having more than one account is usually understood as a form of cheating.

Some players don't follow the rules developers have been set.

Lets be real.
We are a small community on BGA
I do not have accurate data. (It is my oppinion).
Moderators/admins can not cover everything.
Is a agains the rules?
Yes.
Does that "SMURFING" hurting everyone?
Well, only a little.
It is negligible compared to "KINGMAKING" which makes the game completely unplayable and uncompitable in terms of trying to compete in Arena.
It is a very unpolite and disgusting thing.
So if the accounts are not "KINGMAKING" it is slighly OK. SMURFING and SMURFS are in all games.
And for developers its very hard to do something with it.
So I would instead of this question focus on KINGMAKING, and gameplay chat rules, but its other theme.
Thanks for reading try to report these KINGMAKERS It is not hard to find them.
For me it is a mystery, that some off them have won arena and still not beeing suspended.

You actually bring up two issues at once, and I'm curious what triggered you.

1. The player has reached a high position in the arena rankings and doesn't play anymore to ensure his leadership. This could potentially prevent you from reaching a high position, but it's not prohibited by the rules. You mention this, but you don't focus on it, highlighting another issue.

2. The player has a second account, not for kingmaking. This doesn't bother you, but it seems like you're writing about it. But it's unclear to me.

I'd really like to understand what drives you?

Bonus question: the player could have chosen not to list his main account and you would hardly have suspected anything. Since he creates an additional account, should he have done so?

Personally, I don't like it when someone stops playing after a few games just to preserve the ranking: it's like a boxer not wanting to put his crown back on the line.
Moreover, this is not even balanced by not being able to play the whole season, as you can do it with a second account.
In some seasons I have been in the top 10 for a while (this season I was second, right in the middle of the two accounts we are talking about), but I have never considered not playing until the end to maintain the position.
Maybe, I would do it towards the end of the season, after a considerable number of games (which would then, in some way, legitimize my result as not due to a lucky combination of events). But not at the beginning.

That said, this is just my opinion. Since the rules do not force you to continue playing, nor prevent you from creating multiple accounts, I think it is unfair to accuse someone of disloyalty. We can talk about it, of course, and maybe even consider changing the rules... But, since these behaviors are allowed, we can only appeal to the conscience of the other participants, taking into account that they may not necessarily share our principles, even without violating the rules. The player we're talking about would not need to prove that he is a high-level player (he was even first and second with his two accounts), but if it is important for him to put a trophy in the cabinet, and he decides to do it in this way, without violating any rules, I think we should accept it.

EDIT: as said in other post, btw, you can't use first account stats for this season to justify Fistful as not lucky-driven expansion... Use second account stats, instead ;-P

EDIT 2: deleted players names, even if is quite clear who refers the OP
