New mechanism to prevent skipping in tournaments

Post by Mathew5000 »

When creating a tournament, you now have two options under "Handle players out of time":

• All players can vote to kick players out of time. [default]

• Players can't be skipped during games.

This is a very welcome option. Glad to see that the players' voice was heard for this issue. Hopefully tournament organizers will catch on quickly and start using it.

Now, it would be nice to see some similar response to the players' outcry for ELO changes.

I'm curious how the default option works. Is there an actual vote, or is this an odd choice of words to describe the old way where anyone could skip an overtime player.

Thank you to BGA for addressing this issue with tournaments. Some questions I have:

• What effect, if any, does the new option have on (a) tournaments already in progress, and (b) tournaments created before today that have not yet commenced?

• Does the new option make any distinction between real-time tournaments and turn-based tournaments?

• What exactly is meant by "All players can vote to kick players out of time"? (a) in light of https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=107708 how many votes are required for the out-of-time player to be expelled (majority? unanimity? one single vote?), and (b) if two players are out of time, do they both lose their voting rights, or can one of the out-of-time players vote to kick the other?

Oh wow, I can't believe they've finally implemented this. Although like others, I am curious how the default option works.

+1

I was very pleased (and surprised) that when I opened the Notification about an update to Release Summaries there were several tournament-related tweaks:
  • Added an options to prevent skipping players out of time during tournaments
  • Official tournaments that can be created by the publishers, that give more XP
  • XP for everyone at the end of the tournament (if the player did finish the tournament)

Well, my curiosity got the better of me so I created a little tournament to test the new mechanism: https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=404060

Any readers of this forum, feel free to join! I am hoping that there won't be many random people joining hoping for a good King of Tokyo tournament, because I deliberately have set the time limits very short. Probably no game in this tournament will be completed, and you might lose some karma points.

If you don't know how to play King of Tokyo, you can join anyway, the play is straightforward.

It's poorly worded, but I think the default option is the previous system.

Wow! I just noticed this by looking at an ongoing tournament and seeing the option to skip on there and immediately came to the forums to check. That’s great!

The option has applied retroactively as seen in this ongoing tournament, Decks Out For Harambe https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=384338

Looking forward to seeing the feedback on the prevent skip option.

In 2p games I see no issue with this other than some delays due to more games going to max time.

For 3p there can be some tricky politics with skipping versus not skipping. If you are in second or third place, skipping usually benefits you because you get to share 1st with someone. With skips removed all games will now default to placement based on thinking time?

This would be frustrating for a player that’s winning, but uses a moderate amount of thinking time (clock on overnight) versus one too slow player and a “no life “ player that is always online and makes all their moves asap.

For 3+ players I would propose that overtime games become a shared win for all players with positive time on the clock. Let me know your thoughts fellow tournament nerds :)

That just confirms that the default option is the old system. They just updated the wording to the new phrasing.
