Tents.

If dropping a tent is a free action then why can't I do it on the way through a room without it ending my movement points. I had 3 movement points and used 1 to go through an open door. Then dropped a tent in the room I entered (still only 1 movement). Then wanted to move on, but none left. Tried it a few times over couple of games and every time the tents end your movements. This how it's supposed to work?

Hi, this is just how the rules of the game work. Makes it more appealing to use cards and other avenues to get more granular explore actions because you can't split the main one.

Oh right so literally can't use a free action during exploration then. And that's how the actual game works? No point in setting up for 3 explore points if want to leave a tent on way through a room.

Indeed

Any free action (or even any action) cannot interrupt another
You have to finish your action before doing something else.
