Legit or not: clues based on part of the word

I started thinking about this because a person used something like "beach" as a clue for "sandwich". Although "sandwich" contains "sand", it has nothing to do with "sand" meaning-wise. Hopefully we can all agree that that's not a legit clue.

Then it got me thinking. What about those compound words where the parts DO contribute to the overall meaning? Like "slaughter-house". Can I focus on the "slaughter" part and clue "in cold blood"? What about "war" or "sniper rifle"? Would these still be considered meaning-based clues?

What about "sexy chick" for "hotdog"? Or "get on the plane" for "blackboard"? Or "cooking" for "butterfly"?

One rule is: "The Clues must refer to the meaning of the Keywords." (see page 5 of the rulebook).

The meaning of "sandwich" is not "granular material composed of finely divided mineral particles", but "a dish typically consisting variously of meat, cheese, sauces, and vegetables used as a filling between slices of bread". So if the clue refers to "sand" instead of "sandwich", I would say, it is not allowed.
