This option if chosen by the Tournament organizer would allow for instead of only one loss in the case of "single elimination" for there to be a set number of losses (2,3,4,...) before the player is eliminated.
One issue being addressed here is that almost all games rely to various degrees on luck in any single game instance. Implementing this suggestion would "average-out" of the outcome the impact of luck in any one particular game.
The other issue is that getting to play only one game in a tournament is not very much fun.

I wanted the same and took matters into my own hands with this type of Group Stage Swiss-SE setup. I was tired of the monthly SE tournament structure with sporadic game scheduling (play a bunch in a row and then wait forever)
"Double Elimination" For 64 players: 5 rounds Swiss, split into 2 groups (only because BGA requires minimum 2 groups) with 7 players from each group advancing. Why 7 advancing and not 8? Explained below.
each group is a perfect 32 player group with 5 round of Swiss for perfect Swiss sorting. With no ties this makes 1 5-0, 5 4-1, and 10 3-2 records. 7 players advance so all the 4-1s and better advance so it is effectively double elimination.
One player with 3-2 usually advances and it's based on tiebreakers so that player likely had very tough opponents, a bit unlucky in pairings. Sometimes their will be a tied game and 2 players will each get 3.5 points and both can advance.
The 5-0 player from each group gets 1st for their group which puts them as 1st for the single elimination seeding. With 7 players per group, 14 players to SE finals, this means both 5-0 players have a bye in the first round! I can't make it truly "double elimination", but I can reward the undefeated players with a bye and easier seeding (yes, single elimination in Stage 2 is seeded).
