Set maximum table speed

Post by Seker_SFC »

Hi, this has probably been asked some times in this forum, but shouldn't there be a possibility to set a minimum/maximum speed for tables when matchmaking? I'm tired of being thrown into 24 moves per day tables because I set my speed to flexible as I don't want to only set one possible speed. It's also terrible finding myself in a 1 move every 2 days table, where a simple game takes a whole month and I can't do anything about it.

Should already be an option for it, please let me know.

The option already exists if you click the "PLAY NOW" link at the top of the screen. You can change the 3rd menu to say "AUTOMATIC" instead of "MANUAL", add some favourite games, and then click the gear icon next to each game to configure the speed options you are interested in. It's a bit of work to figure out, but it works well, and is many times superior to the new game-specific lobby.

What Shivaware said about using the "play now" lobby -- https://boardgamearena.com/lobby -- also applies to Arena games. If your choices for game speed include any of the fast turn based options, you should also set your preferences for playing hours.

Your preferences for a given game should stay until you change them. But you do need to set your preferences separately for each game. I don't recall whether the settings carry over between automatic and arena -- check both if you play both.

There are a number of bug reports & suggestions open related to fast turn based games & playing hours. I'd been pondering putting in another requesting that "turn based" and "fast turn based" be separate categories for "flexible" speed, and that fast turn based have some sensible options for playing hours (the existing "flexible" is way too flexible), but that isn't as flexible as the play now lobby nor will it cover everyone's preferences. Translating that into a UI that's less complicated than the play now lobby interface is perhaps not viable.

Any thoughts on what a good user interface for this might look like?

You should be able to set a minimum and maximum for the matchmaking service to consider. It shouldn't be such a difference from allowing every speed possibility in comparison to excluding for example slowest and fastest. Same with hours, as you can only set one of 24 possibilities or completely flexible.

I'm fine playing with people from other continents, but when being forced to adapt to the speed and time preferences of the other playery it's just really unfair not only to be kicked out, but also to get a penalty.

I also just got kicked out from another Terraforming Mars table at fastest mode where I didn't want to be. People should just chill a bit, some here actually have lives and even dare to sleep.

This is objectively false. Shiva and mikkashar told you how to do it. If you don't understand, ask for clarification.

Re: the manual lobby, are your only speed options slow, medium, fast, rather than the specific turns per day you'd be happy with?

Firstly, what turns per day is even in each category? But secondly, it does seem quite inflexible, because I might want to play say 3-12 turns per day, but I assume the latter is in fast, which if I then select I can end up in a 24 turns per day game that I don't want to be in, and is quite a big difference.

Then I assume this only works if searching for a game through the "Play Now" Lobby? Because my settings are already set not to play with 24 or 12 moves per day and still I get them in Arena through the game-specific page.

Would be great if, should the above-mentioned be the case, if thise settings would apply no matter if using the play now lobby or the game-specific page.

Yeah that would be great. But the single-game lobby was specifically dumbed down as a design choice because supposedly the Play Now lobby was too confusing, so you are unlikely to ever see this granularity of options there.

In https://boardgamearena.com/lobby ("play now" in the header), there are three boxes across the top that let you specify the type of game you want to set up (or join). The left one lets you select "simple game", "arena", or "tournaments" (which takes you to https://boardgamearena.com/tournamentlist where you can join an existing tournament or create a new one (premium only)). The middle one lets you select a real time or turn-based game: a real time game has slow, medium, and fast speed settings, which vary by game and generally range from seconds to minutes per turn, and you can only play one real-time game at once; slow turn based games range from 48 hours to 6 hours per move with a clock that runs 24/7, while fast turn based moves range from 3 hours to 1/2 hour per move, and and the clock only runs 12 hours per day ("playing hours"). If you include any fast turn based games speeds in your preferences, you also need to set the range of playing hours that are practical for your schedule -- people joining games where the playing hours run through their sleeping time annoys ~everyone. The third box at the top lets you select who can join your table and/or how you are placed in tables: friends only, letting BGA automatically add you to tables that match your preferences, or manual, where you look through the list of open tables and select which one(s) you want to join.

If you're creating or joining games from the lobby (rather than from the pages for individual games) [edited: I reversed these initially] you can select a specific set of games speeds you're interested individually per game -- it doesn't even need to be a continuous range -- and can also indicate different speeds & playing hours that are best for you or varying degrees of tolerable or unacceptable if your preferences aren't available.

The controls presented on the individual game pages have a very different UI and don't allow nearly so fine a degree of control over the parameters of the games you're placed in if you're using automatic or arena matching.

As far as I'm aware, you can't select specific game speeds for games started from new lobbies/game pages. The preferences you set under the cog in the old lobby only apply to automatically created games in the old lobby (or Arena). These settings do not carry over to the new lobby. The only options you have for time selection in the new lobby is one speed, or "flexible" (which means ANY speed, though I think it still respects whether you chose turn-based vs. real-time speeds). This is how people set they want 2 turns/day, but "flexible" and end up in a 24 turns/day game.
