How to fix a wrong but already approved translation?

Post by Lorthirk »

Hello all. While playing Ark Nova I noticed that one card has been translated in Italian with the wrong name. The string has been already approved, but I'd really want to provide the correct name. What are my options?

An experienced Italian BGA translator can do this. I suggest you ask in the Italian translation forum https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=414 for it, if you don't get an offer here.

Language is a source of misunderstanding. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery: The Little Prince) But it is also the source of understanding - it all depends on how you use it. :-)

Hello, I came here because I have seen a lot of quite obvious errors in otherwise translated strings.

This is quite troublesome: Why were those translations validated with such blatant errors in them ?
Also the whole process seems quite rushed: a few days after the translation opens it's already closed and validated even with such errors, I even wonder if some don't use IA under the hood to rush things at the cost of quality.

And the worst part is that this rushed translation validation locks away real persons that could fix the errors.

I feel the whole process would need an overhaul here since it's now a widespread plague I have seen in all recent games.

All texts are automatically validated after 30 days without change.

The requirements to correct a validated translation are stringent. I saw "Nitrogen" instead of "Azote" in numerous place in a French translation for a game, but I can't correct it.

Sounds like a bad design since it effectively prevents all improvement to bad translations, which are more and more frequent, and I don't see any benefit from it.

How to propose a change in this behavior ?

I don’t think so. After 30 days, translations can still be edited by „seasoned“ players (reputation of at least 90, played the game at least 10 times, your account is older than 3 month, …) and trusted translators (more than 100 validated translations).

(When a translation gets auto-validated, it means that it has been used for 29 days in newly created games. 29 days, where almost everybody could fix the translation, but nobody had done it. After 30 days without an change, the translation gets trusted and the translator gets their reward (1 gift point). Translations can still be edited, even after years, and if you are not qualified for editing validated translations, you can use the translation forum of your language to find someone, who helps. Any system, where other users need to approve a translation manually to become validated, will lead in a much lower number of validated translations, which means less gift points for volunteer translators.)

An option that has not been mentiones yet, is that you yourself translate more. That way you become a trusted translator, and can also edit those validated ones.

I'm not a huge translator myself, but it seems having 500 translations validated is enough for me to occasionally fix one that has already been validated.

The mistakes I see the most are game terms being translated in the wrong way, or inconsistently by different translators.

And bad Google translations not being caught before 30 days have passed. Some texts just do not appear much in a game.
