I think another lens that is important to consider alongside the mathematical breakdown is the meta game too.
When we play titanium mine gen 5, the expected value is almost never “profit”, the compounding inflation of money does not allow it.
There’s a lot of little things that can go into it. It’s my 6th building tag, that contests builder. Maybe my opponent has five or six mineral production and I am making an early miner fund feel uncomfortable (do not underestimate how much just 2-3 prod can really make miner shift). Maybe playing mohole area makes sense gen 5, because I see the opponent engine getting stronger and think the heat will change the game pace. (And impact thermalist)
What if I have one steel? The nature of unused money is that it decays very quickly. Am I getting *enough* value that this imperfect play is getting improved upon by actually spending this?
What other things are going on this gen? The valuation is much worse if I’m choosing between getting ice asteroid down versus playing ti mine. This one is very important: am I going to have enough next gen? Just because you don’t see your lost opportunity doesn’t mean it won’t come slap you in a gen or two.
