What's the etiquette on Skipping Players Turns

Hi.

I've had BGA for a while but only recently started playing a lot. Like 10 games in 24 hrs. Most of my games have had players taking up their timer well past the alloted time. Just wondering what the etiquette / expectation is when players take too long? Is this normal? Majority of my games have players go well past into the red timer. I dont want to skip someone's turn only to get a nasty message or them give me a thumbs down at the end of the game. I just want to know what the community's expectation is.

Then you should have an option to expel that player, it's here to be used.

The "expectation" from the offending players is that you will ignore that and simply allow them to take as much time as they want. They may expel you as soon as possible, though.

Any other reasonable player will accept that if they run out of time, they can be expelled, whether it's their fault (got distracted) or not (unexpected visit). Even third parties accept that if a player runs out of time and is expelled, the blame is on the expelled and not on the expeller.

That depends. I prioritise finishing a game that has a chance of being finished over playing absolutely within time limits - so if a person is playing regularly but taking (small amounts of) too much time and another player expels them, I will red thumb the expeller. I do accept that they have the right to do this, but I just don't necessarily want them playing at my tables.

It's a very different story if a player disappears for a couple of days (or about 5 minutes over time in my rare real-time games) - I often think that means they won't be coming back and then I may well expel them myself.

In a real time game:

"You are consistently going over the allotted time. Is there something causing this, because, it is unfair to the other players."

Turn-based:

"You are several days past time to make your move. Is everything okay?"

In my real times games in which someone went past time, I look at the profile, and every time, the player has not logged in or made any moves in any game. I'll give that player the chance to return. Obviously, something in life happened.

if, on the other hand, the player is making moves in other games, I might say, "You're online and making moves in other games. It's unfair for you to use so much extra clock in this game. Please make a few moves today or I will skip your turns and expel you."

Usually, you can tell if someone is still playing. Perhaps they have accumulated a lot of cards/cubes/trades, etc. you know they are just trying to sort it all out. This usually happens when the player is winning and the expelller is going to lose. They take advantage of the timer.

Other times, you see they are offline and in a losing position, waiting for you to kick them out. You for sure know this is the case when you click on their profile at the end of a game and they are already in another one. This is common at the start of arena season when players still need 10 points to level up. They just want the game to end so they can try to win points in the next one. Red thumb!

I am a LONG time BGA player, it has definitely gone in waves, but has been pretty consistent for the past many years and a premium player. I play a LOT with my online circle of friends, but just recently decided to venture into tournament play. It took a few games to learn how it worked, but I have enjoyed it a lot. The variable countries and time zones have definitely put some players at a disadvantage (3 Euro + 1 Asian/US or vice versa), but I haven't have any issues with time limits and being skipped. I've run out of times often, and been the player with the most time left in other games - cribbage 14 days for Bo3? Vale of Eternity 3 or 4 days with 3-4 players and multiple times zones?

I get on to play about 2-4 times a day, take turns for about 30-40 mins, so might have multiple goes in one game (often cribbage when we're on at the same time), but typically it's take a turn in the 3-6 games I'm playing, then play a few games with a friend, clean up any more turns and stop for a good chunk of time.

I don't close the browser or even my laptop at times - does that show that I'm "online?" or does it have to be an open, actively view browser window? Is there a way to be alerted via text message? I don't open my emails but maybe twice a day... I did take a 30+ hour trip this weekend, but also took turns at least 1-2 times per 24 hours, so 3 times or so over the trip (lots of driving without service, so scratch 6 hours right there, then 16+ hours at the beach... ocean... so no playing there). YES... MY choice, but really? Maybe it's me...

Funny, the game I was skipped in was the turn after I played cards that were going to generate a good amount of points/money each round and we only had two rounds left of 10... why skip me? Nothing was mentioned before, no one asked, just a random comment - "What a missive..." and then skipped. game ends, I lose Karma, possibly kicked from tournament. This is normal? So just skip people in the game as soon as I have more points? Really? If it's all cutthroat like that, maybe ansychronous tournaments aren't for me, because I believe in gamesmanship and want to compete, not win on a technicality.

WOULD LOVE... constructive, yet honest feedback. Anecdotal tidbits of your experiences... They that kicked me from Vale of Eternity to let me know why, and why they didn't check in first, anyone else who has thoughts or missives... reply here or DM me, just be civil and polite and I will do the same, always. Totally fine with agreeing to disagree and don't see "It's YOU" as a bad thing, just honest. I don't know what I don't know about the tournament community on here.

I liked your post and feel very same-same-y about it. Pretty much agree with everything. Thank you. And yes, sometimes, I prefer to circle back to Age of Innovation before making a move so I skip, but always circle back in the same cycle (30 min check in on turns). I surely didn't need time in Vale of Eternity - although BGA has been having LOTS of connection issues and I'm often refreshing my screen browser or entire laptop/tablet.

Is there a way to get turn alerts as texts? I'm going to search the forums, but thought I'd ask...

What you do when you're not playing, your reasons for being offline, your attitude during the game, your expectations from the platform, etc. They're all irrelevant. You join a game with a clear timer, perhaps you think it's just a "suggestion" and you are fine playing a slower game, but others may think it's already too slow, or cannot keep playing/waiting for their own reasons. The site has the rule that anyone can be kicked when their timer reaches 0, are you really surprised that people are more likely to do it when they're losing than when they're winning? You have your reasons for taking longer, others have their reasons for not waiting longer. Not wanting to lose may be one of the reasons, but there are plenty of others, and just "not wanting to wait" is a very good one.

I don't understand.

So, by your own admission, you went on a pleasure vacation. "16+ hours at the beach, so, no BGA playing for me", or whatever you said. Cool, sick brag. Sonds like a good life. I am envious. ( Seriously )

What the heck does that have to do with your expectation that people will just let you run out of time in a game ?

I mean, there are at least 3 ways to prevent or reduce the likelihood of this being a problem:

1) Don't start turn-based games when you have a planned vacation coming up.
2) Use a vacation joker.
3) Message the opponents before your trip and say, "Hey, I'll be away from electronics for a few days, please don't kick me."

Sounds as though you did none of those, and then were surprised that you were kicked? I don't get it.
