Statistics - please explain

Post by sphyle »

Hi guys,

I really love playing Backgammon, and have also already accepted the slowness of the game at BGA.

Today I checked the statistics from this game and asked myself 'What do I see there'?

For example: 'Geworfene Päsche' (doubles) I have a value of 4.88 -> What is 4.88? It's percent? It's relative to something? It's with all other numbers the same. Would be nice, if somebody could explain.

That should mean that across all of your games that you've finished, you are averaging 4.88 doubles per game.

That was my first guess, but how does it fit with all doubles?
  • Double 1: 1.29
  • Double 2: 1.28
  • Double 3: 1.16
  • Double 4: 1.52
  • Double 5: 1.31
  • Double 6: 1.22
This is a sum of 7.78 and does not fit at all to 4.88

That does seem odd, yeah. Only thing I can think of is that there's a difference in how those two are counted.

Maybe, for example. Doubles you roll but can't play (when on the bar for example, don't count for the overall doubles rolled stat. But do for the seperate doubles stats.?

As someone who thinks the Backgammon RNG is off, I’m really interested in the answer to this question.

I'm also interested to get the statistics explained.

1. Because I really like statistics and dive into them
2. Maybe we can collect some data and try to find some strange values ;-)

Yes the dice should be randomly distributed

The average/median sum of rolling 2 dice is approximately 8.2 pips (when you roll the dice thousands and thousands of times and get the full data set and create a histogram distribution chart of the outcomes)
(Example 6/2 or 4/4 or 5/3)

For the OPENING roll where doubles dont count and you have to re-roll, then the average pip count for 2 dice is 7.1
(Examples: 6/1; 4/3; 5/2)

One if the nice things they have over on Backgammon Galaxy on the site and app you can check your User Statistics and it will show you all your dice rolls and your opponents rolls along with the EXPECTED rolls to verify that no one is favored by any significant amount and the your avergae and the opponents averages are in line with the expected results

See screen cap below taken from my phone from the Backgammon Galaxy app
