Using Mantas & Locations during your Main Action

Post by P4553ng3r »

Hi,

I played serval times this games, before I played this one online. I´m a little bit confussed, because of following problem within BGA.

Normally you can resolve 1 Main action and unlimited additional actions like flipping Mantas and using locations. Within BGA you have restrictions. For example.

I use a "buy a location" flip a Manta for additional coin, use 1 coin field from location and want to use a Manta to raise the location to reach the position for another coin field. But it´s not possible. (Location with three fields in a row; coin, empty field or else, coin). So Manta with coin, or Location with coin is possible to resolve, but the Manta or location with an raise isn´t possible to use.

Section of the rule:

"During their turn players must do 1 Main action and may also perform an unlimited amount of additional
actions. These actions may be performed in any order you choose."

AFAIK You can use the raise option by a manta previously to your main action or after it, but not within you main action. But only in BGA, within the table game it´s possible and one of the main mechanic.

Did I missed something?

You can do as many "additional actions" as you want before and after your "main action", but not during. During your main action you can only use resources (coins/tridents as appropriate). You probably played it wrong in real life.

PS. And while you can "overpay", you can only do it if you spend the last resource you used. For instance, you get 1 coin from character, you use 2 coins from location, and then 3 coins from another location... you can now only buy something that uses at least one of those last 3 coins, so something that costs between 4 and 6 coins. If you use the locations in the reverse order (3 first, then 2), you can only buy something that costs 5 or 6 coins, as otherwise the last 2 coins would be useless.

Jellby is correct on all counts.

I love This game. It's becoming a top game for me. If you ever want to play, send me a friend request. I enjoy chatting in-game and discussing strategy, and if you want to play me, I'll answer any questions you have about rules or strategy.

(I only play this game turn-based, but I make my moves often).

I see you are 2-0 and already at 90 Elo, so maybe you don't need any help :) But I'm still up for a game if you like. Friendly mode, turn based.

You can use every Location only once per turn, so you can't use two additional actions from the same Location in the same turn

This is mostly correct, but not entirely.

Usually, locations will not have consecutive coin resources or consecutive usable power resources, thus making it impossible to use a location twice in the same main action. (Meaning, resolving your character card).

There are two exceptions:

1) Yellow location 13 has consecutive power resources that can be uses in the same conquer action (This is the only card that can do this)
2) The Grabber can use some of locations that have consecutive specialized conquer powers, such as "+3 power toward Green" for the first conquer, and "+3 power toward red" for the second conquer.

Also, locations that have multiple "additional actions" (Arrows, retrieve character, recruit character, and score) and be used repeatedly in one turn.

The RAW don't explain it very well. Your turn consists of three "parts"; first you may trigger unlimited Actions via Locations or Mantas, second you must perform a main action (play a Character) and you may trigger unlimited *Resources* via Locations or Mantas, then third you may trigger unlimited Actions via Locations or Mantas.

Actions = Raise Location, Recover discarded Character, Score a Raised Location, Recruit a Character for free, etc...

Resources = gain Coins or Tridents.

Any Action or Resource you trigger must change the game state. E.G. you cannot trigger Coin Actions during a Conquer Character effect.

To expand on this:

The game interface here also confuses this by saying, at the start of each player's turn, "You must play a character or claim a goal". This really should be changed:

"Perform actions or play a character". And then, after the character is resolved, "You may perform actions or end turn." It is not necessary to say, "You may claim a goal. Especially since most of the time, there is no goal to claim.

The full list of actions, which can be taken before or after playing and resolving the main character, but not during:
1) Single raise
2) Double raise
3) Fully raise
4) Score a card
5) Retrieve a character from the discard pile
6) Recruit a character for free

Resources, as mentioned above, are +X coins and +X conquer power. Coins can only be gained and used while performing an action that requires coins (Buying a location; recruiting a character with the Diplomatic Crab or the Blue Water agent; or paying the activation cost of The Healer or Theseus). Power can only be gained and used while conquering a location.

As Robrob noted, location depths cannot be raised unnecessarily. If a character is played that already gives sufficient power or coins for the desired action, it is not legal to raise a depth that gives more coins or power just to get those depths raised and risen.

Here, that can happen when raising too many locations, but also by flipping a manta after playing a character. Example: You play Meg (+3 power), and then flip a manta that gives +2 power. You now have 5 power. You also have a location depth that gives +2 power, and you need to raise that depth because you want to access the depth underneath it.

But, if the location you are conquering only requires 5 power to conquer, you will no be able to raise the +2 power depth, because the character Meg and the Manta already give the necessary 5 power. At that point, the active player will need to reset the turn and perform the sequence without flipping the +2 power manta.

An entire turn can be reset as long as no cards have been revealed and as long as the opponent has not taken an intervening action (as with Meg, Adela, The Turtle, or the Researcher.
