How do I store extra sprouts on my board?

I could not figure out how to do this. Am I misunderstanding the rule?

As far as I remember there is a button like "0/2 extra sprouts" (or so) on top.
When you have clicked it, go down to your board and you will see the possible flora cards where the sprouts can be placed. The spaces where you can place the sprouts are framed. Mark two of them (in the example above) and confirm with the button on top. If you mark less (or none) you are asked if you are really sure with your decision to waive.
(The same with the tree tiles.)

It appears that simply confirming "place 1 of 2 sprouts", with all the sprout spaces filled, will automatically place the extra one on the player board for future use.
