Re: Tournaments FAQ

Post by Rell-Witten »

I am running some tournaments. In this set of tournaments I most recently made, I started using the "Players can't be skipped during games" option. This has led to a handful of players asking if I can kick players who are a large amount past their time. From what I've been able to see, I gather I can't kick players from the games themselves. Is there a way to kick them from the tournament however?

No. When you create a tournament on BGA you simply define its parameters and set it in motion. You are not a tournament director.* You are simply a tournament creator. Once even one person joins you can't change anything about it other than writing updates in the Recent Activities box or cancelling it. This, of course, means you can't remove a player.

I'm curious why you chose (and other players joined) a "Players can't be skipped during games" tournament, and then want to be able to punish a player for going over time. There are a couple reasons why this option was added. First, it allows the possibility for games to be finished even if someone goes over time without allowing a losing player with a positive clock to strategically end the game. Second (and somewhat related), it eliminates the arbitrariness that the oldest accounts advance if someone is expelled. Advancing based on the time left on your clock is somewhat less arbitrary. But to the extent that it is still arbitrary, at least it doesn't systematically favor any particular segment of user.

*I'm excluding official tournaments sponsored by the game publisher for which I imagine BGA offers some additional administrative support that we mere mortals cannot access.

I was inquiring for the scenario where someone is just not playing at all, and not withdrawing from the tournament. I do believe this would be extremely rare however. Thanks for the response!

Can I create a tournament for the same players and different games?

For example, a 5-player tournament, where all games that support 5 or more players are available for selection, and the tournament would be for 5, 10, 15, or 20 plays like Swiss tournaments but different games for each play using the Swiss scoring system: ....,+6, +4, +2, 0.

I don't think this is possible right now but, will it be implemented at some point? Or is it something that will never exist?

You can't do that using the current settings available, and the chances of BGA implementing it are probably 0.1% considering how few minor tournament setting updates have been made over the past 5 years. Make a suggestion though if you want to drive the idea - https://boardgamearena.com/bugs

I think you could realistically implement yourself this as a hobby board game organizer on BGA by creating a group, getting players interested, then setting up and managing it. Other organizers have done similar "Master of Many Games" style challenges with results tracked from multiple tournaments from many different games.

Biggest challenge would be promoting and finding an audience to play all the games you are interested in. Running the multi-tournament format would be a lot of work, but could be fulfilling for you if you enjoy hosting.

In the past few days, multiple tournaments I've opened have been immediately closed without explanation. I'm really confused as to why this is happening??

https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=423184
https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=423185

Why were both of these closed prematurely? The start date is weeks in the future, multiple players had joined, and I did not do this myself. Any help? In both of these situations, I came back the morning after opening the tournament for registration, and they were closed. Bug report: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=179751

I remember someone reporting there being some kind of interaction with the "Registration Starts" setting and/or editing the start date that seemed to be causing this, but I'm fuzzy on the details and I can't find the post.

That definitely sounds like it could be the culprit. I changed both of those fields a few times as I was figuring out the schedule.

To test, I'll remake the tournament and not edit the start time. But I'll edit the "Registration Starts" setting and see if that triggers this.
