Getting 27 points from the petting zoo animals. A Bug?

Is it possible to get 12 points from the final petting zoo animal or is this a BUG?

I was playing at this table and the opponent started playing petting zoo animals late in the game:

They got 6, 9, and 12 points from the donkey, pig, and the goat, respectively. First of all, how is it possible to start getting 6 and not 3 from the first animal and second of all, how it ends with 12 and not 9 points? They got 9 more points this way and triggered the end of the game by that! Is this really possible and am I missing sth here or is it just a bug?

Petting zoo animals score by the number of icons, not by the number of animals. Horse whisperer has a petting zoo icon, so the first petting zoo animal played scores 3+3, the second 3+3+3, etc.
