Two player games - why did I lose when the other player abandoned their game

This is in relation to Hanamakoji. I logged in to play my move and was adviseed that the other player had abandoned their side of the game. I was asked if I wanted to abandon the game too. As Hanamakoji is a two player game, I reluctantly agreed.

However I then looked at my closed tables and it stated that I had been eliminated from the tournament. It was not my choice to abandon the game but you cannot play Hanamakoji with one player.

I find this unfair as I would have happily played the game as I do like this game. If I had said "No" tot he question, then how would the game have developed when the other player had quit the game?

Anybody give me suggestiosn of how I could have won the game in this situation in case this situation arises in the future.

In the future, it would help if you provided a link to the game in question. I had to search your profile to find the tournament, then search the tournament to find the table you were at. It's here:

According to the log, the other player didn't abandon, he proposed to collectively abandon the game. You agreed.

Since you both agreed to end the game without seeing it through, there's no winner. How could there possibly be? Both players mutually decided to walk away.

Adding on that abandoning games in tournaments is allowed if mutually agreeable, much easier to agree in 2p. The only exception I am aware of is for single elimination where there needs to be a clear winner to advance, I believe it is disabled. If you abandon a game in Swiss or Round Robin both players get equal score, 0.5/0.5 for 2p.

When is abandoning games in tournaments actually helpful for the average player? One example would be signing up for an Ark Nova tournament with 225 players without reading the settings (like so many BGA players do for some reason) and then discovering that the tournament is actually a two stage round robin tournament with 14 games starting simultaneously AND game duration is only set to 24 hours and kicks are enabled.

A mistake like that could cost up to 14*4= 56 reputation loss if every player skipped you. If you are uninterested in playing the games (or unable to because that is a ~6 hour commitment) you can offer to abandon the games on every table and should expect to get many offers accepted considering the circumstances. Players fighting for the top group spot will likely decline, but anyone with a few losses and no chance to advance should gladly accept.
