Choosing a foyer side

Post by Zhym »

In the tabletop version of the game, each player picks one side of their foyer card to use. One side has three entrances, the other side has four. I haven't seen that in the BGA version. Is that not implemented, or am I missing it? If it's not implemented, are there plans to add it?

My experience with the in-person game (original and collectors) is that all foyers have exactly three doors. Foyer is double-sided so that the third door can point either up or down to adjust to your table top space constraints.

In BGA, you have to play with the Moat expansion and then it allows you to choose a side.

Okay, one side has 3 exits and the other has 4, I was wondering about that. So if you don't want to mess with building off your drawbridge, can you select the 3 exit side, blocking off the drawbridge, and complete the foyer with only 3 rooms attached? Or, better put, if you choose 3 exits (regardless of how you orient them), do you only need 3 rooms to complete?

Yes, if choose the side with 3 entrances then you can complete it by connecting those e entrances. Keep in mind you cannot complete your moat without a drawbridge entrance.

I just checked my (fairly old) copy of the game and sure enough, the foyers all have only three entrances on each side.

I was led astray by the online rules, which on page 5 of the PDF say, "The back of the Foyer has a 4th entrance. Choose a Foyer side before the game begins." Maybe that's a change in recent editions?

Yes, the newer edition comes with a double-sided Foyer. If you buy the expansions, you get the rest of the parts (incl. Moats), but you can still play with a 4-entrance Foyer as per rules, without moats.
