The king is dead, long live the king!

Post by Kuijpie »

I hope you liked the clickbait title
I wanted to reflect on the inaugural TacTile tournament that is currently ongoing with the semi finals just started.
The tournament is a knock-out format with 1d games (12h per player).
I think 1d is too short, especially with the game ongoing 24/7. With different timezones the 12h can be gone after a good night's sleep and a busy morning. Many games have been decided by time (hence the clickbait title, as tactileking just lost his QF on time).
Also a KO format is pretty rough, I think a swiss type tournament is better suited for this game, giving all players an equal amount of games and, after the first 2-3 rounds players should start meeting similar strength players.

I agree. Since there are players all around the world, 12 hours can quickly be exhausted over one evening as I discovered as I was in Sweden when the tournament started instead of California. We need more time per game, at least 24 hours.

I think the rationale for the fixed time is to make sure the tournament doesn't go on forever. Regaining 8h per move means a single round can take a whole month, I think it is difficult to keep people interested in a single tournament for several months.
48h per player means 4 days per round, and with a 7 round swiss tournament that would be 28 days for the whole tournament, that seems pretty reasonable to me

Yep, I was knocked out super fast since my timer ran out while I was asleep. We need more time next tournament, otherwise it's just a "who can move the fastest" tourney, like so many end up becoming.

Great clickbait title ;)

Yea I got knocked out by timing too haha full disclosure it was my first BGA tournament. Swiss type sounds good - I think 3 days per game should be enough? Someone made 1000 Bournes which looks like a good format if that one turns out well I’ll make another like it
