Do corners count as adjacent?

In the attached image, I'm trying to place Billiard Room, a red room with an adjacency penalty. I would expect to gain 6 points: 4 for placing Billiard Room, 3 for connecting to West Tapestry Room, and -1 for the adjacency penalty. However, the UI says I will gain only 5 points, indicating that I will also get -1 for adjacency with East Tapestry Chamber because their corners are "touching". (if I turn the tile horizontal so that it's definitely adjacent to both, it still says I will gain 5 points)

I know the rules state that any amount of touching is considered adjacent. However, if I was playing this on a table I absolutely would not consider these tiles to be adjacent. It is exactly only the corners that are "touching". I put "touching" in quotes because, honestly, they really aren't touching. Mathematically, the very tip of both corners would occupy the same point on the grid, but that's it. No length of either tile is flush against the other whatsoever.

So, is this correct? I found a thread on BGG where someone claims that the rulebook says "If rooms are touching only at their corners, they are not considered Adjacent" but I am unable to locate this in the rulebook itself. (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/156940 ... r-question)

I will submit a bug report if this is incorrect but I'm asking here first to make sure. I have not been able to find a clear answer.

I think the rulebook's intent is clearly to specify that corners "touch". Otherwise round rooms would never be adjacent to anything (except through their doors).

in that picture, that is not adjacent.

adjacent in this context would mean "same wall or border."

i would not count two corners as adjacent.

Can you please cite where in the rulebook it clearly specifies that? I do not see any mention of corners counting as adjacent or not.

Also, round rooms don't have corners. I'm not sure how that's relevant to this.

I did not say it's clearly specified, I said that's clearly (in my opinion) the intent.

Two corners touch as much as a round wall with a straight wall. If two corners did not count as touching on the grounds that they only share the same "mathematical point", then a circle and a straight line, which also share a single mathematical point, would not touch either.

I'm not really interested in opinions. I want to know the official ruling, so that I can submit a bug report and have it corrected.

I have to disagree. My bad for putting it in those terms. Look at it like this:

The game takes place on an "invisible" grid (or, on BGA, a very visible grid). If a rectangular room is tangentially adjacent to a round room, they would be occupying two orthogonally adjacent spaces on the grid (sharing an edge). You would also be able to very clearly see the brick walls on both rooms literally touching. This would inarguably count as adjacent.

If you had two rectangular rooms occupying two diagonally adjacent spaces on the grid (not sharing any edges), would you honestly argue that those tiles count as adjacent to each other? Because I would not.

Page 11 of the rule book says "Two rooms are considered adjacent for the purpose of Room adjacency penalties if any part of one Room touches any part of the other."

Since it doesn't specify specific parts of a room need to be touching, then corners that are physically touching are adjacent.

Edit: 1st edition and collector edition both say no to corners being adjacent. Who knows why 2nd edition was changed to "any part".

This thread and the advanced edition rulebook seem to disagree. Corners touching is mentioned in the part about activity rooms. Touching corners should not be counted towards adjacency.

I agree with spaceman256, and should also point out this game is not about being precise in geometry. But even if we were, another way to think about it is to put a line (a stick if you will) between rooms touching by their corners. If you rotate this stick, you can rotate it freely 90 degrees. Now if you but a stick between a circle and a rectangle, you can not rotate this stick. Yes, they only "touch" at a point, but there is way less wiggle room.

(EDIT: Now that I have the real game, they - original tiles - I've confirmed actually are not circles; it's difficult to spot but the 90 dgree parts are straight / have a flush part)

If you look at the tiles of the circle pieces, they are not actually circle. They are "squished" in that they have a flat part every 90 degrees, be that a doorway or a straight section of a wall (this is actually also mentioned in the rule book - they are not perfect circles).

Starting to become a monologue, but I still have another question I could not find an answer (in discussions coming to the conclusion that corners touching does not count).

But what about the Foyer? It's doorways are a bit "wider", i.e. their straight section is longer than a grid square. If there was a corner of an activity room (with corridor penalty) next to the doorway, it should count in any case (as it's more than just the tip of the corner what is touching).

A picture may help to explain.
