Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor, translation unified criteria for Latin names

Post by jatubio »

In the game 'Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor', what criteria do we follow for the statistics page? The English version uses Latin names in the text. For example, for a type of dragonfly, we have "Emerald Damselfly" as the common name in English and "Lestes sponsa" as the Latin name. For the statistics, the English text is: "Average points with Lestes sponsa," but in Spanish, sometimes both are translated as "Caballito del diablo esmeralda," without respecting the Latin name in the statistics text. And sometimes the Latin name is kept.
What criteria should be followed?

In General, I would say, that we should translate English into target language (Spanish, German, French, …) and keep Latin untouched, except the official rulebook of the target language does translate the Latin words.

But for the concrete game „Forest Shuffle: Dartmoor“, I wonder why the developer uses the English names throughout the game and the Latin names for the statistics. Doesn’t it confuses the players, when the statistics use names that are not used in the game? I think, we should ask the developer, what he intended by using Latin for statistics and English throughout the game. If there is a valid reason, we should follow him when translation into our target languages, which means we should not translate Latin names. But if the developer did not use Latin intentionally, we should ask him to fix it in the original English texts, and then follow him with our translations.

I will contact the developer and ask him. Maybe, he could explain the intention.

Hello,
Thomas is totally right.
I don't remember exactly but with Forest shuffle we had 2 different strategy with the core game and one expansion. One was with latin names (which have to be translated), but it confused our editor and was not really handy. An other was with english name but translators had problems because they had to first translate english name into latin name then into their own language.
On Dartmoor, I tried to keep both, firstly because Latin name adds a flavor text pretty cool, secondly because I thought it would make the translation process easier.
So YES, please do not translate latin name.

For the statistics, They are only "limited" so they are only visible to editors so I didn't put enough attention on it. You can translate them, it will help editors or leave it as they are, it doesn't matter. They have been created automatically using the internal name of the object in the code and I didn't think about translations. Sorry for that.

@Thomas and @firgon, thank you very much for your answer!!

I'll check some Spanish translations and see if they need to be reversed to the Latin name or keep as they are.

Related with the spanish translations of the tutorial in spanish.
I don't have right to fix the translations but in the tutorial (at least) appears the word Moor translated as "moro" but the correct one is "páramo".
If any with translate privileges could fix it will be great (if not I will try to play several times until have that permissions).

Thank you in advance!

Please ask in the Spanish translation forum https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=418 for support.

Language is a source of misunderstanding. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery: The Little Prince) But it is also the source of understanding - it all depends on how you use it. :-)
