Mulligan With Only A Shrub?

Post by Waco Bill »

I recently played a game where my starting hand had zero trees and one shrub. Since shrubs are not trees, shouldn't I have been offered a chance to mulligan?

Is this a bug I should report?

I am a bit confused about this. On BBG for the base game https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/345365 ... ligan-rule it says, the mulligan rule "was deleted from the rule book at some point, as the overall feedback our studio received on this topic was: ah, we don't need this", but the contemporary rulebook on the Lookout publisher page https://www.lookout-spiele.de/en/games/ ... -downloads has it: "Everyone: draw 6 cards into your hand. If none of these cards is a tree, you may take a mulligan: discard all six cards to the box, and draw six replacement cards from the deck. Each player may mulligan at most once."

I read the Woodland rulebook https://www.lookout-spiele.de/en/games/ ... eedge.html and it says: "Play the game according to the base game rules." I even checked BGG for mulligan in Woodland and interestingly couldn't find anything about it: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpa ... /forums/66

From all this I tend to say yes, according to the rules, you should have been offered a mulligan. However, I think it is a bit against the spirit of the game. The mulligan should help you out to start your gameplay, if you have no base cards to play your animals and plants on, but in the Woodland expansion shrubs serve as well as trees as a base card.
