Are bugs ever fixed in time to allow a game to continue ?

Post by danielvictor »

Are bugs ever fixed in games in which they have appeared, allowing those games to continue ? Just curious.

That depends on what you mean by "bug".
And whether the game is:
1) real-time (there is no chance a bug will be fixed before the timer in a real-time game expires) or
2) Turn-based (unlikely with most turn-based timer settings, but possible if the bug is actually just a connectivity; access issue rather than a rules or action bug) or
3) Turn based friendly mode (You can wait 39 days before making a move, so, probably).

I'm an admin for the bug report forum for one game here. Most of the bug reports regarding rules, actions, and anything to do with the actual code of the specific game, are erroneous reports. And of the ones that re actually bugs, very few of them prevent the game from continuing.

Most of the bugs reported are some variation of "I had a 503 Error"; "I couldn't load the game"; "I got kicked from the game when it was not my turn"; "BGA says it is my turn but when I load the game, it is no my turn", etcetera.

In those cases, the developer for the game cannot do anything. Those are Internet / server / connectivity / network issues and have nothing to do with the code for the specific game in question. These are usually temporary and will resolve on their own by waiting a few minutes or pressing F5. Sometimes it is a system-wide issue, in which case penalties are rescinded.

The bug that has foiled me is in a turn-based game, has 66 votes, and has not been reproduced by developers yet. I could do something else in the game, but if I did it would almost certainly be disasterous for me. The 66 votes make me pretty confident that it really is a bug !

I am curious. Can you provide a link to the bug report and to a table number where your game is stuck?

Yes they are. I've had this happen in games on a few occasions. It depends if the developer is active and probably on the nature of the bug (easy to diagnose and fix). I think where it's happened for me has been on fairly new games - either still in beta or just out of it, so that's likely why the dev was active and paying attention in time to fix it.

https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=40011 is the report, I'm not an expert on the game rules but it sounds like there's a situation where the player should be able to skip refreshing an assistant, but there's no button to skip.

The problem is, there is no active maintainer on Lost Ruins of Arnak that I know of. KuWizard has admin rights but I do not think they have time to dig into bug reports, and it sounds like the project code itself may be very complex to analyze and debug.

In short, it would probably take some volunteer who wants to spend hours digging into the code, and maybe a new bug report from someone at the precise moment this bug is occurring. That would give a DB snapshot that can be analyzed in Studio.

Yeah, that seems like a definite bug, with 66 upvotes going back more than 4 years.

Surprising, considering its status as a top game on BGG and more than 2 million plays here on BGA.
