Game not played anymore?

Post by MrChrobry »

Hi,
how come I never see anyone playing that game? Did it age badly?

Great game, just takes a long time, and the implementation has some querks that irritate new players.

Caylus has been my #1 game for many years. I'd give the implementation a B and it's best learned in person. I recently taught it to my BGA group, but it takes time.

Many gamers also prefer the flavor of the month games versus (what many call) the best classics, (Power Grid, Agricola, etc). Accordingly, there aren't as many plays of "older" games.

Great game, but for me unplayable on here. I can't see what is going on because of the blurry graphics. Had to abandon it.

I see this game is listed as "strategy 5" and "luck 0". Is this truly a zero-luck game? Because, that is difficult for find in a thematic strategy game.

The only randomness is in the initial distribution of the six neutral buildings and initial player order.

The only other big strategy game I know where the only randomness is in the setup is Terra Mystica (and its offshoots). Medina could also count, though that's more abstract and has zero randomness (except starting player).

I’m just concluding a three-player turned-based game. I don’t think I’ll play again here.

1. The tile graphics are incredibly low-res and fuzzy, making it near impossible to know the placement costs of some without reference out to a BGG posted file of a sheet set of tile images.

2. The game mechanics are incredibly bitty. What makes for quick play in person (or possibly played live on BGA) becomes almost trivial actions, both in the worker placement phase but then in the action phase along the road. E.g. do you want to leave the inn? Do you want the food or wood cube? Etc. One small choice, and then I wait for my next turn to make another small choice.

On that second point, I wonder if modern games deliberately design a turn to be more substantial. I just played Revive here for the first time and there a turn is two main actions plus quick actions. That feels meaningful when taking a turn.

Indeed, zero luck, no dice, no random card discovery, data is available to all players at the beginning (game configuration is changing at each game). Only luck aspect is the very first order of player playing (that is compensated in the game) as the sequence of playing is then determined by players' choice.

There's a new version "Caylus 1303" which is simplified. I used to play this game on the iPhone app back in the day. I wish i could get a copy of it again. I love the 1303 version which is very fun.
